Pre-race routine:

Usual cup of wawa coffee on the drive down, water, banana, bagel and cream cheese and a protein bar. Got to the race early despite driving though torrential rain and lightning storms. stopped raining as we arrived at the race site. long walk down to transition area with gear. Nice and relaxed as we had plenty of time.
Event warmup:

Had a little calf strain the 2 days before the race and was unsure how it would be. took it easy in warm up, stretched and took a little swim to see how it was swimming in the new team uniform.
Swim
  • 17m 44s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Large number of people in wave but it was ok and i found open water pretty quickly. I guess this is just how fast i swim. went steady all the way and just tried to get into a rhythm as much as possible. just wish i could be a little faster. did manage to draft for a little while which helped. did get passed by 3 women from the next wave who started 5 minutes behind me.
What would you do differently?:

need swim lesons. want to be a little faster
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

long run along rough parking lot to bike which slowed me down as i did not want to wreck my feet. felt like a good transition
Bike
  • 47m 58s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike ride. like the course with lots of false flats. got down in the aero position as much as possible andtried to keep good cadence. enjoyed the bike and overtook quite a few people. felt like i went hard but legs felt good off the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

good transition. felt strong leaving. body glide and baby powder in shoes helped with a smooth transition.
Run
  • 20m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

had a really good run. was lucky to have a woman leave transition with me who was fast and i paced mself with her. she overtook me in the first 100 meters and i tried to stick close to her. really enjoyed the different surfaces, took me back to high school x-country. big puddles due to all the rain. was hot out in the open but there were plenty of water stations. last 1/2 mile was road and i pushed harder and past 6 people includig the girl i had been following. my calf problem did not materialise and i felt fine the whole way. great run for me.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race

Event comments:
