Swim
Comments: If I knew that so many guys in my wave were slower and either back or side strokers, I would position myself in front of the group. The start was slow due to swimmers ahead of me just walking in shallow water first. Then I had to pass quite a few of them. There was some kicking and hitting on the way further. The exit was also a mess, since many participants walked in the water again instead of swimming as far as they could. Despite all of this obstacles, I did my best. What would you do differently?: Check the water next to swim in and out before the race. Find out who is in my wave. Take the risk to be in front of the wave. Transition 1
Comments: There was a long run to transition, but the timing mat was about half way between the lake and bike rack. Enough room between racks, grassy surface, easy to locate exits. It still takes me too long to put the shirt and shoes on. What would you do differently?: Practice more. Bike
Comments: Many of the participants did not follow the rules, so passing them was difficult. I pushed hard. This was my best bike performance comparing to other sprints this year. What would you do differently?: Practice more turns, corners, and changing gears. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. What would you do differently?: Jump off the bike and running faster. Run
Comments: My best 5K time this year. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Short bike ride to parking lot. What limited your ability to perform faster: It was my best sprint triathlon performance. The swim time could be even better, if I would anticipate the combination of too many slow swimmers in my wave and shallow water. Event comments: I liked local atmosphere, reasonable number of participants, spacious transition, and well organized course. Registration and packet pick up was available on the race day. No info about swimming waves assignment posted ahead of time. Good course for first timers and there were many of them. Last updated: 2013-07-31 12:00 AM

I did not get good night sleep before the race, but felt good in the morning. I got up at 2:15am, ate cereal with small coffee, and drove to Winneconne (about 2,5 hours from Gurnee). PIcked up my packet at 5:10am, got the body marked, and set the bike in transition area. I walked around and mapped out surroundings.
Walk, jog, stretching, and jog for about 15 min. Checked the water - it was warm. No warmup in the lake.
