Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00 am for breakfast and load the car. Had a bagel with PB and some coffee while trying to wake up. Was out the door by 4:50 am to drive the 10 minutes to the race site. It's first come/first serve for both parking and bike rack placement so we knew we were getting there early, but was ok with it. We got body marked and learned the person with the bike rack numbers overslept so you could rack wherever. The bike in/out is in the same location so me, Brad and Karen all racked down near that end. Set up our transition area, hit the port-o-potties and checked out part of the new path which we thought was on the run course. Had some time to hang out in the car before just milling around and chatting with our group and a teammate, Matt Tavares, who was racing.
Event warmup:

No real warm up. Got our wetsuits on and started to make our way to the beach/start area. The buoys weren't even blown up yet and it was 5 minutes before the race was to start. There was a pre-race meeting at the finish line then everyone walked to the swim start.
Karen and I wished Brad and Matt good luck and then waited around for a few minutes for our wave to enter the water.
Swim
  • 10m 39s
  • 587 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Karen and I made our way out to the in water swim start. It was kinda chilly, but not bad temps. We couldn't hear the megaphone so really had no idea when our wave was to start.
The gun went off and I went as hard as I could. There was some chop and a current and I could tell I was working harder than usual. My navigation was ok, but could have been better. I was catching people two waves in front of me before making it to the turn buoy. I thought we'd get more help from waves as we made the turn towards the shore, but it wasn't as significant as I thought. Got into shallow enough water and stood up to walk up to the beach. The swim was tough (between the chop/current/exhaust and my effort) and it took me a little bit to be able to run.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I got out of the water around 8:30, but swim time includes long run up the beach and along the boardwalk into the TA. Maybe run sooner?
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Good transition. Nothing to fix besides running down the wrong row.
What would you do differently?:

Run down the correct row.
Bike
  • 37m 13s
  • 11 miles
  • 17.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Was able to get clipped in and up to speed quickly (left shoe has been giving me some problems lately). My Garmin wasn't reading my power or HR data. Despite re-syncing it during the race twice, it wasn't working. I decided to stop messing with it and just go. Was able to see Karen and Brad out on the course which was nice. Had GU20 and took some sips a few times during the ride. Happy that no one in my wave passed me on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Maybe double check power tap is reading to the Garmin before the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

Solid T2. Slipped my Zoot shoes on and put my visor and race belt on as I ran.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 4s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Took off and started to question if I could hold the pace for the entire run. I biked hard, but the conditions were ideal (cooler temps and lower humidity). I got into a rhythm and mentally tried to take myself to speedwork on the track. I started ticking down the miles and focused on passing the next person in front of me. Made it back to pass the finish line area before heading out on the OAB. Saw Brad and then Karen. Hitting the final stretch on the boardwalk was nice, bit it felt never ending. Nice feeling to not have anyone in your AG pass you the entire day.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Due to the lack of security in the TA, we grabbed our things and loaded the car. I changed, we grabbed food and waited around for awards. I was 1st in my AG, Karen 2nd, in her AG, Brad was 5th OA and Matt was 2nd in his AG.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of true speedwork for short course during the year.

Event comments:

While there are hiccups with the race, it's still once of my favorite races.
Pros
Karen was able to get our packets
Fun, fast course (with new run course and better bike course)
$7 parking, but it's not the fault of the RD as it's the town

Cons
Started late
No numbers on the bike racks (which was fine since we were early)
Bike in/out is in the same spot
