Pre-race routine:

quick b-fast at hotel. not enough chow but was a little short on time to get to packet pick up. chat up fellow Bters. Since I was in the last swim wave I had plenty of time to hang out. Try to not let the per race jitters roll in.
Swim
  • 33m 59s
  • 1408 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

hung out with Joe (BODonuts)for the first few yards. Started out in the rear, just let the fast swimmers head out. Since this is the longest I have swam this year, no training swims, I was not expecting anything too good. Focused on getting it done. Actually was pretty at ease in the water and didnt get too tired. Paced with another swimmer which was cool.He and I played tag along the way. I think I passed him in the last couple hundred yards but the passed me on the way to T1.

Last years time was 30 min. and the previous year was 36 min. This year I was right in the middle with no training. Thats ok with me. LIke to get better but that can be the future.
Transition 1
  • 04m 44s
Comments:

Took too damn long in transition!!! Walked from the pond to the bike, dilly dallyed watching the Elite's come in from bike and head out for run, screwed around with wetsuit on heels, etc.
Could have shaved a minute or more off which would have brought my overall time to a better PR.
What would you do differently?:

  • 1h 20m 8s
  • 25.9 miles
  • 19.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Used my 1990's vintage 'old school' tri bike for this race. We havent raced together much this year!! It was fun to ride this bike in aero or in the bars while flying by folks with BIG BUCKS carbon bikes!!

I didnt really push too hard as in past years. Worked on cadence discipline, using the downhills and flats and lots of shifting. Thanked the volunteers too! LOL..I almost forgot. This other guy and I kept passing each other along the way. We laughed each time. I ended up dusting him one a downhills around 15-20 miles. 35 mph can put some distance bewixt the competition!

kept an eye on my time. I wanted to be done with the bike at 2 hrs in order to give myself 1 hr to complete the run and be under 3 hrs total. Ended up racking right at 2 hrs.
Transition 2
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Focused a bit better on T2. racked up and headed out.
Run
  • 54m 52s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt good, no wobbly legs. Knew I had an hour to get the run done. Paced the first 3 miles around 10 min miles. Picked up the pace after mile 3 and each subsequent mile. Decided to pour it on for the last mile (I was getting HUNGRY too!!) and see if I could get in for a PR or close to it. (PR is 2:54 ish) Knew I would be close and hey....it was fun passing folks! ;)
Saw Sue near the 6 mi park and she was looking like she was having fun. Did a high 5 as went by.
Ended up hitting 2:54 at the 6 mile mark which jazzed me BUT..I forgot about that damn .2 mi!!!! (always gets me in marathons too!) FIgured I had to really steam it on and give it all I had to tweek near 2:55 or I would be pissed at myself. Kicked in all I had for the sprint to the gate. I knew there were lots of cheers along the way but I was just ssssooo pushing the limits that I couldnt change my focus.
Finished pretty exhausted and staggering abit. Feel I scared Mrs. Sparrow and Isis with my overall condition, sorry ((hug)).
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all. good run. felt strong and ready.
Post race
Warm down:

fluids, cold sponges, walk around, grab some chow and some warm clothes as it was getting chilly out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

faster performance would be perhaps in the swim and T2. Overall, physcally I felt ready. Mentally, I kept in a positive self talk all the way.

Event comments:
