Swim
Comments: I just couldn't get into a good groove. I stated towards the back because we all jumped off a dock and I thought we'd be wading around for a few minutes, but they pretty much sent us right off. I passed a few people, then go hit by a few, but more or less settled towards the back because my breathing was terrible and I just could not get anything going. I know I've neglected the swim but this really sucked. I just need to at least keep up with the pool work. What would you do differently?: Who doesn't say it, but swim more. Major slacking on the swim. I felt it kind of wear me down a bit this time, so I really have to get more time in the water so I'm fresh for the rest. Transition 1
Comments: Holy crap that was such a bad transition/mount on the bike. The run back to the transition was rough and rocky, then after you mount you go straight down a hill on a dirt road, and the dirt was a little loose and I almost lost it a few times. Really tough to navigate and it was tough. What would you do differently?: Not much, I felt like I moved with the right urgency for what I wanted to do. I can always be quicker but it was fine. Bike
Comments: I live all of 5 minutes from here, so about 60% of the course is in a typical route that I do. That other 40% though, there were some rollers and hills and some tough parts. I kept it pretty even in terms of effort because I really wanted to be fresh for the run. I got passed by a few people, passed a few, nothing big. I was alone for most of the ride really. I saw a pack of 2 or 3 about 100-200 yards in front of me, but we all kept our distance about the same the whole way. About 1/2 way through my left calf cramped up really bad. No clue where that came from, but it was sore. Ended up not impacting anything, but it got really tight and I can still feel it now. What would you do differently?: Get out of the water quicker. Bike felt good. I know I turned it down a bit so I could have something left for the run, but I'm afraid I might have left too much. Transition 2
Comments: Little bit of an uphill run on a dirt road in my socks, but the rest of the transition was ok. Feet got wet, but I got my shoes on quick enough. Took a big gulp of gatorade and was off. What would you do differently?: Dismount a bit better. Run
Comments: Finally, I paced the bike so I had enough left on the run. If this was a flat road course I think I would have had close to an 8 minute pace. I have to wait for the final results to see the actual pace. This was a trail run. And a trail run indeed it was. There were 2 hills specifically that I was on my hands climbing up, literally. There was a stream that I was able to jump over, but the woman behind me had to kind of jog around. Lots of roots and rocks and some pretty tough terrain. I was surprised how nasty it was. Personally I love trail runs, I think it mixes things up, and I was prepared for a trail run, but not like this. I don't think it had a negative impact on me, but it was interesting. Around mile 2.5 I did roll my ankle pretty good and thought I was going to eat it, but I toughed it out and it's a little swollen but all in all not too bad. What would you do differently?: I was pretty happy with my run. I could have gone a bite harder and I crossed the line wanting to keep running, but that's the first time I've felt like I had something left on the run, so I'll take it. Post race
Warm down: Had a bagel with PB, some gatorade stuff they were giving away, and the rest of my water and gatorade. Made sure to eat a lot after because last time I think I under-ate. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing immediate. More training always helps, but besides being kind of crappy on the swim, I felt ok the rest of the way. I accidently reset my watch after the swim, so I know my swim was 9:46 (however with the walk-jog back to T1). The bike I'm not sure on, I'm guessing around 50-52 minutes. The run was probably close to 25. I crossed at 1:27:52 and I was in the first wave, so that time should hold. Minute here or there with transitions, so I'm not totally sure. I was aiming to beat 1:30 and I'm almost positive I did that, so overall it was a positive experience. Official time put me at 1:28:02, so a few seconds later than I thought. Bike ended up being a few minutes quicker, run a few minutes slower, which makes sense because it was a pretty tough trail run. Still happy with my time, so it's all good. Event comments: This was an inaugral race so it was great to see it run so well. Everything was on time, there was a lot of food after, everything was marked well although I did here some complaints on the run because it was a trail run, however I thought it was ok. Not much in terms of activities for kids, but besides that it was good. Last updated: 2013-08-11 12:00 AM

Woke up around 5:30, shower, had a small breakfast, cup of coffee and a red bull. The race is only 5 minutes from my house so that was awesome in terms of logistics.
Set up everything, went down for a swim, water was nice and warm, but there was a horrible glare, so I went and got my tinted goggles (Lucky I carry all my random goggles with me) and they were much better. Kind of liked them anyway.
