Swim
Comments: I was disappointed with my performance on the swim. As mentioned earlier, I wish I had a wetsuit. Usually I am at the FOP for swim but because it took a while to get into my groove to warm up and get my breathing where it should be I fell off the pace. Siting was tough because of fog and that seemed to affect a lot of folks. I think I was one of maybe 10-15 people not racing with a wetsuit! What would you do differently?: I will be looking into getting a wetsuit this off season. I definitely think it would have helped me with these longer races. Transition 1
Comments: This was an OK transition. I was a little grumpy with my swim and that was throwing my focus off. What would you do differently?: Try not to let a less than average swim performance carry over into transition. Bike
Comments: I came out of transition still stewing about my swim. Saw a real nice buck standing by the road which got the hunter in me smiling. As I kept going, I got back on track with my game plan. I felt great and it was nice to be able to pass folks with tri bikes while I am on my roadie. The spectators along the course were awesome and it really helped to motivate me. What would you do differently?: Look into upgrading my bike for next season. Transition 2
Comments: Came into to town feeling happy about my ride and there was a small congested group of people at the dismount so I couldn't do the rolling dismount safely. What would you do differently?: Plan my dismount a little farther ahead. Run
Comments: I am not the fastest runner and I have been working on this the whole season. I focused on my pacing, hydration and breathing. Everything seemed to click. I got passed about half way through by someone in my age group I figured that was my 3rd place finish and come to find out it was, darn! What would you do differently?: Nothing really. I stuck with the game plan and ran the best run race so far this year. Post race
Warm down: Got hugs from the family, drank some water and walked around a little. Chatted with some racer friends and cheered on some others. The best part was a friend's father made us an awesome post race BBQ! The ribs were yummy. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim performance threw me off a little which took a little bit to recover. Other than that I am very happy with the performance. Event comments: This was a really fun race. Loved the location, racing with friends and the volunteers were awesome! For only being in its second year, ATC brought in some high caliber racers including the National Sprint Champ. That guy can fly! Definitely putting this race on the calendar for next year. Was staying at a friend's parent's house right in town, which was super nice. It was a 5-10 minute walk to the race site. 3 of us were racing so we decided to load everything up into a car a take the quick drive down. Had coffee and a couple slices of bread with peanut butter.
After setting up transition we walked around and chatted with some more racers and friends. I did a little stretching and gave a quick pep talk to a friend doing her first longer distance race. I then jumped in for a quick swim warmup. Glad I did because we were told the water was 70 but there was no way that it was. This was the first time racing I wished I had a wetsuit.
