Total Time = 1h 56m 13s
Overall Rank = 488/1522
Age Group = ClYdesdale 225
Age Group Rank = 3/15
Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 4 , drive down to Race site , breakfast : dry cereal and apple in the car .
Got 2 miles from race site and could not proceed any further
stuck in a traffic jam on Kanan for 45mins moved about 1/2 mile
decided to park there on PCH and ride last 2 miles to race site on my bike
was a good choice as i found out the parking lot was already full and closed and they were diverting cars to other locations

Event warmup:

warm up 2 miles on the bike
Arrive at transition later than planned 6:15am at this stage
Set up transition , double check everything hit bathroom again
Get wetsuit on at 7am for my 8 oclock wave start , In the water 30 mins before my wave for a quick 200 m

Swim
  • 15m 45s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

uneventful , went smoothly , started on the left stayed away from traffic on the left so just swam my race , we were in a small wave so it was not congested swimming to the first buoy

Once in 1 foot water started removing upper body from wetsuit while going to timing mat
What would you do differently?:

Loose weight
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Went very well this may look slow but there is also a run up out of the water into a big ass long transition area , ran the whole thing , so think my stopped time at my rack is about 45 secs finish wetsuit off , glasses and helmet on grab bike and go
What would you do differently?:

Was fastest in division by almost a minute , Not much , only way i am much faster is no wetsuit but then my swim would be slower and would use more energy
Bike
  • 54m 8s
  • 18 miles
  • 19.95 mile/hr
Comments:

Hammered hard the whole time except on the descents which i use to recover and drink
Was very pleased with the energy to attack , good taper
What would you do differently?:

Loose weight would help Also Aero TT bike helmet and wheels would shave 4-5 mins here i reckon
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

Good transition 2nd fastest in division fastest was 3 secs faster and i walked while attaching my number after dropping off the bike and slipping into my elasticated shoes
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 41m 55s
  • 4 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Did not realize but i was in First Place at the run start

Pace was not r that i was hoping for , Mile markers were not missing but i remember water stop aid station was a Mile 1 (and 3) : I was really trying t run 9 min miles this year like i had done in XC races with a lot more technical terrain
but going any faster today was not in me . We were expecting the weather to be really HOt on the run and thankfully looking up at the sky it was misty and the sun was blocked from cooking us
I felt i was working very hard
but had no more gears to speed any more
Got passed by a big CLY rafter 400m running (eventual 1st Place) then many 4-5 more CLY and a lot of other people ,... Damn not much fun :)
figured i was 6-7 in AG since all these 6ft4 big tall guys had past me .on the run
But we have CLY and CLY 225 which were marked the same so hard to assess
What would you do differently?:

Loose weight
Post race
Warm down:

Walked , changed into something dry and out of my soaked shoes which had made my big toe raw , Hit the Donor Buffet since i had fund raised $$$ for Children's Hospital . While eating Heard my name announced for a Podium spot (3 rd .... WTF)
Ran over to the podium , took a few moments as its in the sand and uber crowded , Did not make it to climb on podium but did finanlly make to the awards to pick up my 3rd place Medal. Was happy with my race regardless since i shaved 16 mins fom last year when i was injured .

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight

Event comments:

A large well run sprint Triathlon , Only negative is the lack of parking , the location is beautiful , lots of volunteers and amazing cheerleaders on the course , its well marked , tons of post race food , Lots of port a potty.s . well marked course
and well manned where roads narrows and U turns (3) are performed . Lots of other Plus like waves started on time . Chip timing .
