Pre-race routine:

Same old story!! Eating: Bagel w/ PB 2 hours prior to race, Banana 1 hour prior, PowerGel 15 minutes prior to swim.....Drink accelerade/water throughout up to swim time! Logistics: Got up around 4:45 and ate my initial meal. Dressed and rolled out from Fairfax to Reston arriving at South Lakes around 5:30. Chilled in the car listeningn to music for 20 minutes then set out to set up T2. Went back to car, got T1 gear and Bike and rode the mile to T1 and the swim start. Set up T1, applied necessary butt cream and glide, slid into wetsuit. Waited about 10 minutes then off into the water. I was wave 6 of 7 with the waves going off every 2 minutes.
Event warmup:

Bike from T2 setup to T1 since this is a two transition Tri.

Comments:

2 weeks removed from completing the Louisville Ironman and having done almost no exercise since, I was a bit skeptical how this would go. I had decided to go hard in this race since I felt I was still trained up for the longer distance. Our wave went in and it took a quarter of a mile in the swim to get into it. Once I found my stroke, it became fun. I have never been that great a swimmer but this day was one of my best swims. Even with folks zigzagging the hell out of the course, I got straight to the buoys and rode the line out and back. Ended up catching the wave in front of me and some stragglers from the wave in front of them. Thank goodness for wetsuits right! Ended up 7+ minutes faster than the 2012 race.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Sticking to the buoy line and taking the 2 turns tight paid off. Garmin said I swam 1.06 miles this year versus 1.2 last year (which I swam on the outside of traffic the whole way)
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

Still a bit slow on this but have to say, the T1 setup isn't 'fair' when it comes to the slower swimmers. The racks are at the back from the swim exit and bike exit. Those in the first couple of waves go 1/4 of the distance to get to their rack and exit T1 versus those that have race numbers in the 500 and 600's but hey, it is what it is and the organizers do the best they can with what they have and this is just for fun in the end! Beyond that, T1 wasn't to bad. Just made sure to have everything for the ride and stuff all my gear into the white bag for transportation back to the finish. Had shoes already clipped in ready to roll once crossing the mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe put in a faster swim time just to have a better position for T1?
Bike
  • 1h 01m 57s
  • 22.3 miles
  • 21.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Shaved almost 9 minutes off my time from last year. Just rode hard and enjoyed. Had only my speedfil w/ 42 ounces of water and 1 honeywaffle for nutrition. Worked out well! Jumped off bike and left shoes clipped in. Rode w/ feet on top of shoes. Worked really well!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Just continue to push. Try and get under 1 hour.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

knocked almost 40+ seconds off this T2 time. Took off gloves/helmet. I don't wear socks so slipped right into shoes (loaded with baby powder), threw on race belt. Grabbed garmin and took off! T2 setup is much nicer as they have room to space everyone out evenly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 53m
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 18s  min/km
Comments:

This portion required patience. Not having trained in 2 weeks, the run suffers the most. Decided to take it easy the 3.1 miles out (and the time showed) then ran a negative split (over 1 minute/mile faster) on the 3.1 back in. Really enjoyed the run though knowing I still had something. I wore my UK bike shirt and had tons of people yelling 'Go UK' and 'Go England' etc. That was fun and kept me entertained!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Had fun
Post race
Warm down:

Went to T2 and grabbed gear and T1 bag. Nothing special

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Attitude. Just decided it would be for fun today!

Event comments:

Great local Oly distance race. This was year 30 for this organization and they know what they are doing! Always a blast. Great volunteers and nice finish line at the HS so lots of people can enjoy the runners coming in from the running paths! Great race and plan to keep it on the list of To Do's each year!
