Pre-race routine:

Woke up, drank beet juice and apple juice cocktail. Not delicious. Drove to the race (about 80 minute drive). Drank coffee and ate waffles in the car on the way there (about 2 hours before race). Felt great at start of race.

Alexis and Jonathan went with me, kept me company until warm up just before the race started.
Event warmup:

1.5 mile jog on trails at about 8:30 with some very short strides.

Comments:

After the 4 mile split, the timing company site says I passed 105 people and was passed by none. I can confirm that I was passed by none and have to go with what they say about the 105. I felt strong the last couple of miles because the hilly part was over. I haven't been running any hills.

I think I did a good job tucking in behind people going into head-winds. Also, my tangents were good... GPS said exactly 6.2 at the end. Course was windy and would be easy to run quite a bit extra if someone weren't careful.
What would you do differently?:

Go out harder in the first mile... took it too easy because I heard mile 2 was a big hill and I didn't want to be in oxygen debt too soon. I ended up having to fight through too much of a crowd in the first couple miles as a result.
Post race
Warm down:

ate a cookie about 50 yards from the finish line provided by my wife - there was no post race food. I liked the bare bones nature of this event... my entry fee was $20 and the event was about racing money to fight lung cancer so it didn't have all the annoying frills of most events this size.

switched to a non-sweaty shirt and went to the car with family. we beat the traffic by a big margin and got home easily.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

hills mostly and not going out fast enough. I had quite a bit in the tank at the end and at times was downright comfortable when there wasn't any hill. Also since I didn't know when the next hill was coming up, I feel like I wasn't pushing up against or slightly past LT like I should have in a 10k since I didn't want to get killed on a hill.

Event comments:

Probably won't be a regular race I do just because its a drive to get there and nothing really that special about it that I can't get in any 10k closer to home.
