Pre-race routine:

Really, my only goal for this race was to enjoy it and get a brick. Savageman is legendary, so I just had to try it. Living in Colorado, I have access to lots of climbing, but most of it is not very steep. For training, I went after a few local favorite climbs: SuperJames and LickSkillet. LickSkillet in particular is the hardest road I have ever ridden: dirt and an average of 18% over 1 mile, with parts a bit steeper. I was as ready as I could be. Flooding in Colorado meant I almost didnt make it to the airport, but finally I arrived at Deep Creek State Park.

Event warmup:

Swam a bit and stayed mellow.

Comments:

Water was beautiful. Swam nice and relaxed. I made a point of touching Tommy the Turtle at the first turn-around for good luck. After the Swan, I swam too wide and added an extra 100-200 yards or so to the course. Maybe I should have touched the Swan too.

What would you do differently?:

Touch the Swan

Comments:

Slow, fumbling with socks, but no problems.

What would you do differently?:

T1 is always slow for me -- I need to practice.

Comments:

What can you say about the Savageman bike course. Utterly beautiful. The Westernport Wall came fairly early after a very pretty downhill. I had practiced on the Wall, so I was confident. All that remained was to be sure I had space in front of me. I thought I left enough space, but I caught up to the riders in front of me halfway up. Thankfully, nobody fell and we all made it up the Wall. Big Savage mountain was long, but not very steep. Later in the ride came Killer Miller, my favorite part of the course (did I mention I'm from Colorado? :)). The fantastic spectators helped me up the hill with their energy. The last 15 miles were mostly a headwind and a grind. Then at mile 51 I got a flat. I didnt want to waste time fixing it, so I rode it in with about 20lbs in the rear tire, taking each curve gingerly.

There's lots of discussion on gearing and bike choice for this race. I rode a commpact and an 11-28, and it was perfect. I also chose my road bike. But in retrospect, I think the TT bike would have been better. You certainly cant ride the whole course in aero, but there are good chunks of it that you can, particularly much of the first 15 miles and also the last 10 miles. If you're confident going down, I'd pick the TT bike.

What would you do differently?:

Pacing was good -- left just the right amount in the tank for the run, but next time I'd ride my TT bike.
Transition 2

More fumbling, but no issues.
Run

Comments:

Oh yeah, we have to run too. The run at Savageman seems like an afterthought after the phenomenal bike course. I liked the run course -- it's shaded and cool, with good spectator support. There are those pesky hills, though -- I walked the steeper sections of the campground and the fire road. In the last mile, I got in a dual with another guy in my age group -- we took the last mile at around a 6:30 pace. Nice way to end the race!

What would you do differently?:

My run time seems slow, but it was a good steady run, so I don't think I'd change anything.

The race was just fantastic -- I wouldn't change a thing about it!
