Run
Comments: I lined up with the 3:45 pace group as that is where I hoped to finish. This race was a last minute add in and the goal was to test the fitness, but not push so hard that recovery would be extended. I figured if I at least ran with the pace group I would keep the early miles that do have a slight down hill in check. The nutrition plan was to sip the 10 oz of IM Perform I had with me, take a Hammer Gel every 5 or 6 miles, and add in water, electrolytes drink and gatorade as needed. The miles clicked by one after the other. The weather was perfect, cool temps, little sun and no rain. I enjoyed the encouragement from the spectators going out towards Fairport. Most intersections were heavy with people tracking friends and family and their enthusiasm helped a lot. The relay exchanges were also a source of energy as they were all cheering loudly and the fresh runners would keep me motivated to push. About mile 8 or 9 I started looking for a porto potty, but didn't find one until mile 17. At this point I was ahead of the 3:45 pace group and probably about a 3:42 or 3:43 pace. Feeling mostly good. I did lose about a minute stopping but felt a lot better when I did. As I came out the 3:45 pacer went by and I latched on hoping to follow them home to the finish. Unfortunately with about 3 miles to go the quads and the bottom of my feet started to mutiny and I fell behind. It wasn't a huge surprise as I haven't been training for the marathon and so I haven't had a lot of long runs and none above 17 miles. With a little more than a mile when the soreness was getting to me a younger runner came up behind me. We started chatting and when we got to a short but somewhat steep hill (it could have been 1% at this point) and he starts chanting "twinkle toes, twinkle toes" I about busted a gut laughing. I never really looked over to see him but it turns out when we get almost to the finish when my friend and his mother jumps out that he is my friend Becky's son whom I had met at Tinman. Glad he was along to help take the focus off the soreness at the end. The goal today was to get some quality miles in, test nutrition and stay consistent. Other than the last 3 miles (and mile 17 pee break) I accomplished what I set out to do. I would like to think that even though I lost about 3 minutes in the last 3 miles and didn't hit 3:45, it is still about a 15 minute PR from the 4:02 I ran at Disney in 2010. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a chocolate milk and some bad pizza and headed home. I had to meet Connie and some of the folks in for the weekend meeting for lunch. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing to add here, this has been a great year for my running. Considering I am 49 and still setting PR's. Event comments: Yellow Jacket does a great job and this is a nice course. Someday I woul d like to do this race and train specifically for it. Last updated: 2013-09-22 12:00 AM

Spent Friday and all day Saturday at work meetings, its an annual event that ends with a dinner Saturday night. Took it easy for the most part which helped. Got up an hour or so before I had to leave to wake up and get some breakfast. I have been adding in Ensure to my pre race breakfast of oatmeal and a banana to try and better fuel for the longer events and today was the first race where I did that. I wasnt worried about having enough, but wanted more to see how it would settle for IMFL next month.
Drove up to the race, and walked over to the porto potties for one more stop and dropped off the dry clothes bag.
It is about a half mile from the parking to the start so other than that, nothing much.
