Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30 (WTF before Alarm !) Arrived early , got decent parking , not enough sleep the week before.
Packet pickup in the dark , Start to Set up in transition beside cranky neighbour. " Is there a problem? " is his way to saying hello to a fellow competitor. Maybe its me thats cranky. Fortunately there are
Plenty of good spots left so I move to the next rack besides a friend
who just showed up.

I should have been well rested the week before. I was not .
Ate Small bowl of cereal, banana , apple , little chocolate,
Go Bathroom , I am early so no wait at the WC and they are still cleanish.
Event warmup:

Walk, talk to all my teammates , everone is in good spirit , no one slept well the night before , we go to listen to nicely sung national anthem , watch waves start , get in the water and swim 100 m . Feels good . Lets go ! WTF Heart at 90 !
Oh well ! its the usual pre race Crazy HR , HR will settle down after 1st buoy .
I did Something new for race Day : I am wearing a new TRI team shirt under my Wetsuit for the swim.
Swim

  • 880 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim TRI for me All freestyle , A first for me ! Last year i did this race all breastroke , Relaxed a little after first buoy. Arms felt good , little or no fatigue so my effort was at the right level, breathing was good , pacing was good . with slight pause with 1 arm up front to glide and roll , Like a long swim in the pool where you dont want to let yourself go anaerobic . Its hard to hold back because there are swimmers all around and you want to pass or go faster. I got a good smack on the head from a swimmer that was a little eratic on my left .
At the second buoy I start to catch people in the earlier wave , different coloured caps , and they are easy to pass. So that is motivating. All that work on my swimming has paid some dividends.....
Should have started on the outside left to avoid traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Start on the left and at the front , got stuck behind slow swimmers
I have made the most improvements this year at swimming. Freestyle is a little faster than breastroke and my legs are very fresh when coming out of the water. I was very happy with the TRI swim and the run into transition 1. It was as good as I did in the rehearsals and in my time trials at the pool.
Transition 1
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

Good transition , ran all the way from the beach to the bike , passed a few people walking this part. Got wetsuit off , cleaned feet and put on socks and shoes , grab gels . The new shirt is working out just fine , no problem swimming with it under the wetsuit. Plus its very confortable and has nice big pockets at the back. And I get lots of free cheering . Ran with the bike shoes to the mount line , All at a good clip... I could rest a little when I get on the bike ...
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little faster at getting shoes on . Got everything and ran in and out with bike , passing people in transition area
Bike
  • 1h 04m 22s
  • 18 miles
  • 16.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Soft tire at mile 9 at the turnaround , i could feel my back end wobble a little , climbed bad hill at Leo Carillo and stopped to investigate , was still firmish like at 60psi , decided to add little air with co2 cartridge and chance it home , no luck , let more air out instead...
A good samaritan gave me a shot of air with his CO2 , thank God i would have walked home . I was really pissed at my Co2 failure . So decided to nurse my bike home , hoping the tire would last 20 mins. I did not use the aerobars and did not ride very hard for the second half of the course. As i rode past the transition area at mile 17 I had some thoughts of cutting the course If my tire was not holding up. But It was OK so I finished the bike .
I decided to shift my focus on my run split and see how much faster I am this year. Since I could not control the flat and the equipement failure.

What would you do differently?:

I Probably went out too hard in the first half , Heart rate was 160 , could not sustain speed throughout course. Learn to use emergency tire fixing kit better.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Good transition , Seem to take forever to put shoes on ,
What would you do differently?:

Missed my rack by one . Because I had moved racks in the dark and with tire puncture and fear of DNF worries had forgotten where my rack was actually 1 away. No Biggie , Shrek was cheering me on, Bring balloons next time...
Run
  • 37m 43s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Good Run , would have been better with more rest during the week and not having lost time on the bike . ave 9+ min/miles
What would you do differently?:

Sleep enough the week before a 2 hour race like this one.
Post race
Warm down:

walk , cheer the rest of the DW team
Sit down for the nice brunch.
Hang out at the beach for the afternoon . :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep , Get more rest , Some residual fatigue from the triathlon the week before, It was most noticable on the run.

Event comments:

Well organised , well marked course , roomy transition area . :)
Bike course is a little tight coming out of T1 with the cones and all , Our poor team captain Scott had a bad fall on his bike after hitting a cone. But he got up got cleaned-up by the first Aid people and finished the race, He Rocks ! What a fearless leader. Its a really cool course. The hills make you work hard onthe bike and the run at the end is always a challenge. Thank God its flat !

Good controlled pace HR 90 at rest ! . 140 during the swim, that OK its a race. Breathing is pushed a little but under control . Slowed stroke a little and kept head in water in the middle 600 to relax and for economy. It worked great.
