Total Time = 6h 58m 52s
Overall Rank = 17/102
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/8
Pre-race routine:

Gatorade, Cinnamon Raisin Bagel and 1 Salt Stick capsule
Event warmup:

short run and easy swim warmup prior to gun
Swim
  • 1h 13m 42s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got kicked in the face at first buoy. Had to regain composure and fix goggles. Sea nettle stings on face twice. Missed an orange buoy on second lap and had to swim an extra 75 yards to get to it. Chop increased on return leg of each lap. Waves were noticeably bigger on second lap than first. Overall swim 23/102. Average overall swim time was 1:24:31, 1:20:50 for all males, 1:18:20 for M50-54, 1:21:29 for all 40+ males. I was 17/53 men and 11/42 for men 40+.
What would you do differently?:

Sight more often, so I don't miss the buoy. I tend to sight less frequently as the race progresses.
Transition 1
  • 04m 43s
Comments:

Right heel stuck getting wetsuit off. Used TriSlide, but still had some trouble with right heel. Passed two people in transition. Ranked 24/104 in T1 time. Came out of T1 20/102. Average overall T1 time was 7:21, 6:25 for M50-54, 6:44 for all males, 7:04 for males 40+.
What would you do differently?:

Get legs down to heels as quickly as possible, then put thumbs under heel to wedge off quicker.
Bike
  • 5h 40m 27s
  • 112 miles
  • 19.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Kept topped off with hydration and nutrition throughout the ride. First half of each loop had headwinds and second half had tailwinds. Took advantage of tailwind as much as possible, while still staying within my power zone average. Overall 17/102 on bike segment, passed 8 people, got passed by 5 people. Average overall bike time was 6:22:02, 6:05:04 for males, 5:56:13 for M50-54, 6:08:29 for 40+ males.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water in between Gatorade. Put on more sunscreen at Special Needs stop. Take less time at Special Needs.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and then went for a 2 mile brick run. Felt great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stayed in prescribed power zone. Did not try to race the bike segment. Could have gone a little faster, if I were racing as hard as possible. That was not the goal of this race, however. It was a dress rehearsal for IMFL.

Event comments:

Could not find post-race massage tent. Good race and well -organized.
