Pre-race routine:

Up and out w/o breakfast. A little DD coffee (half-caff) with cliff bar on the road. Half-banana at beach. Hydrate with half canteen of water. At the race site to park at 6:40 for 7:30 race. Prime parking spot!!!
Event warmup:

Walked a lot because of sore left Achilles (think it is from the bike ride and/or attempt at a post-bike run -- stopped because started too fast -- on Friday).

Comments:

At the end, I got chatty with another runner I challenged to race the last mile. Unfortunately, he slowed and I kept pace with him, and guys I had passed earlier started passing me. I abandoned that plan, said goodbye, and then took off. May have wasted 15-30 seconds on the slower pace. Was planning a 7.5 min last mile, but ended up 8'2".

Also, pissed because phone was not giving me feedback as planned. Mile 2 marker was WAY misplaced, and it had me at 20' for the first 2 miles! Post-race I checked my phone app, which said I had passed mile 2 at 16:25! Go figure.

Happy with performance. Using quick pace and was able to really feel the difference when I decided to lengthen stride. Burned it out with long stride at the end. Finished strong as planned.

mi 1: 8'6"
mi 2: 8'18"
mi 3: 8'10"
mi 4: 8'18"
mi5: 8'2"

What would you do differently?:

Stay within my own race. Say hi if you are going to, but don't challenge anyone to race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking/drinking a lot of water. Left Achilles aching and seized up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Phone not working. Planned to stay around 8.5 min for first 3 miles, then have negative splits, with around a 7.5 min final mile.

Event comments:

Very highly attended. Over 1,000 people between a 5k walk, 5k run, and 5 mile run. Big corporate sponsors. Panera Bread for breakfast afterward, BUT just a bunch of bagels and sweet stuff rather than healthy stuff. Disappointed with options, but I did have a banana, and there were PLENTY of bottled waters after the race.
