Swim
Comments: First time really swimming with the scrum. I concentrated on arching my back to elevate the hips and diving my hand more than a foot into the water on entry. Sighting was fairly easy since I had people around all the time. Did a decent job of avoiding kicks because I was looking forward more than normal. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: I didn't wear a wetsuit, which probably saved me time in transition and didn't hurt me on the swim. Biggest slowdown was pulling shirt on (I was damp from the swim.) I also had a slight problem getting shoes on, but not too bad. What would you do differently?: Wear a tri suit. Bike
Comments: Almost skidded out on one of the few damp spots on the road. (Had rained the night before.) I fishtailed but managed to recover. That cost me maybe a half minute. What would you do differently?: Better conditioning would have made for a faster ride Transition 2
Comments: Laid out the bike right. Got a swig of water as I got off, which was all I needed. What would you do differently?: Have gelcap nearby. Could have used one. Run
Comments: Really a struggle. May have biked too hard. Pretty much blew my guts out on the run. The time above isn't quite right because the course is mismeasured by about 10%. I'd estimate I ran at a 7:45 pace, which is fine considering how tired I was at the end. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Walked around. Drank chocolate milk. A lot of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Needed more protein the night before and the morning of. Should have pushed harder at the end. Missed second in AG by one second. Event comments: Well organized race, took too long to get to awards, but that always seems to be the case. This is my second year, and I've enjoyed both. Last updated: 2013-10-02 12:00 AM

Should have had more protein at dinner the night before (I had black olives on pizza with sweet potato fries as an appetizer.) I had a clif bar for breakfast but quickly realized that wasn't enough. So we got a plain bagel on the way. Had part of that.
I should have filled a water bottle before I got to the site - water wasn't readily available. (I begged some off a race organizer.)
Took two G1 gummies about 15 minutes before the start. That was about right.
For breakfast, I should have peanut butter on toast or on a bagel.
Ran about seven minutes before the pre-race. Also swam about a minute before the start. That was about right.
