Pre-race routine:

Not much had a coffee 1 glazed donut and a bottle of Gatorade
I was joking with Tony D and other guys from the Fast Splits team (fast dudes). At that point I knew it was going to be tough to win the whole thing as Tony is just a crazy fast on the bike and then the other two guys from the fast splits team are also very fast. But since I haven’t been training for short courses I just wanted to push hard and see what I could do… no pressure (well not a lot ;))

Event warmup:

I rode the 5 mile course easy with Tony Delogne to find out the road conditions and then we did a few all out efforts. Before the swim I didn't have time to swim a bit which I think I should always do to loosen up the arms (will do next time)
I ate a hammer gel and sip of Gatorade, plus salt tablet before the start
Swim
  • 10m 20s
  • 700 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

WTF? I can't figure out this swimming funk. It is like each time I swim OW with a wetsuit I am not moving! I started behind Tony, Pat and Joe as all 3 are strong swimmers so I could draft off them… YEAH RIGHT! I lost them in the 1st 200 yds and I pushed so hard I was grasping for air. Eventually I regroup and swam at my pace which was a SLOW one, but I also bump into several swimmers from the wave ahead. *so frustrated with this swimming thing* Anyway I came out of the water 2:20+ sec behind Tony
What would you do differently?:

I am working to figure this out
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

not the fastest transition but it was ok
Bike
  • 37m 23s
  • 15 miles
  • 24.07 mile/hr
Comments:

As soon as I was on the bike I began pushing the pedal to try to stay a few min behind Tony and catch other racers. My HR was through the roof (like 185 on the bike) but I didn’t care as I was passing people and avg a good speed. On the beginning of the 2nd loop just before the biggest hill I switched to fast to my 39 ring and my chain felt off and got stuck in my front derailleur. I had to stop and fix that and it cost me like 40 seconds cuz that dam chain was stuck! 5 guys that I passed came flying by (arrrggg) I fix it jumped on my back, climbed the hill and I was off chasing those guys yet again. At this point I just wanted to avg over 24mph and finish top five. I avg 250 watts for the ride and my HR was totally LT most of the ride.
Before getting to Transition I saw Tony and Pat where already on the run course. Tony was like 4 min ahead so there was no chance I could catch him up and Pat was like a minute ahead so I figured he was out as well. I saw another 4-5 guys ahead that where within striking distance.
What would you do differently?:

I haven't done much specific work for short courses so maybe I'll add a bit more intensity for my tempo rides
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

In and out. I had a bit of a trouble with my sneakers but it only took me a few seconds to figure it out
Run
  • 29m 8s
  • 5 miles
  • 05m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

As soon as I was off I totally ignored my HR cuz I was going to push as hard as possible. I figure I might be able to avg 5:40s per mile but within the 1st mile I felt my legs burning from the high effort on the bike. I wasn't sure what pace I was going to be able to sustain but instead of backing off I just kept pushing through. I figured that if I ran out of gas it was fine cuz at least I would learn my limits. Within I mile I passed 2 guys (one fast split guy). In the next mile I catch up with Pat (apparently he was having a bad day) and another guy. By mid point I was struggling to keep my form and I felt like I was about to get a side stitch (f*ck!) I poured some water on my head and ask the guy at the water station how many ahead of me, and he replied: like 5… WTF? I am not even top 5 with 2.5 miles to go, this can’t be! Oh well suck it up Jorge and push. Going down the hill I could see 2 guys ahead of me so I kept pushing and just focus on running form and breathing. I was able to gun them down and pass both but I realized one of them was on the AG-40 so he started 4 min ahead. After a quick mental calculation figured I should be 4th or 3rd. I turn into the last 1.5 miles and saw another guy, so I put my head down and kept pushing, we reach the final turn and the girl at the water station told us both: you guys are battling for 3rd place. By then I was just feeling good, I mean I was suffering a lot but I was ready to push hard for the last ½ a mile, so I turn and look at him and said: “dude, you and me” in a funny joking tone and we both smile. He told me: “well let see what we can do” and we laugh again. We both wish each other good luck and I just pick up the pace one final time. Within a few sec I open up a gap and in not time I was ahead of him by like 50 yds, so I kept pushing and hoping I could catch someone else, I turn into the final stretch and saw the finish line and no one else so I figure I was 3rd, I just sprinted to the line.
What would you do differently?:

nothing much. I ran as fast a possible for that day, after a hard effort on the bike. maybe drink a bit more?
Post race
Warm down:

ate/stretch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not focus on short distance and my lame, slow, sucky, rodiculous awful swim.

Event comments:

Tony D beat me by like 5 min which is a lot! I was hoping to finish like 2-2:30 min behind him cuz I knew his bike split was going to be insane. (It was, he avg 26 + mph) but the extra 2:30 min were cuz of my lousy petty attempt of a swim and my chain issue on the bike. The 2nd place is a guy on his way to go Pro (I think) with a few wins under his belt and a couple of sub 4:15hrs HIM so he is a good athlete. he beat me by 3+ min. (1:30 was lost in the swim + bike issue) On the bright side I beat my time from last year by 7+ min and enjoyed most of my day. For now I am off to work on my ludicrous swim :)
