Run
Comments: Felt very good, kept to my desired effort level. Probably could have pushed a little harder but wanted to save something for the remainder of the race. It turns out my 10min/mile pace was 3rd slowest in the entire field, which was surprising to me. What would you do differently?: More run training. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: I ride this course frequently, so I knew what to expect. I installed an 11x28 MTB cassette onto my road bike and that helped my climbing tremendously. It just takes a while to spin up these hills. Passed about 10 people on the bike leg, was passed by maybe one. This is likely a testament to my slow run leg rather than a fast bike leg. Took a water bottle at the hand-up station, which was located at the turnaround. What would you do differently?: More time in the saddle. But the 6% grades will still be 6% grades. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Ran out of gas about halfway through this run. Did a run/walk for the last 1.5 miles. What would you do differently?: Need to do longer training runs. My longest training run was ~7 miles, but this duathlon was 15k of running (~9 miles). I should be doing a long run of at least 10 miles in preparation for this race. Also, I probably did not take in sufficient calories on the bike. Post race
Event comments: Very scenic and challenging course. Very close to home so I will definitely be back again next year. There is also a short course option 4K/15K/4K that avoids most of the climbing including Ancho canyon. Last updated: 2006-07-06 12:00 AM
