Run
Comments: Started off 15 minutes prior to the run taking a Cliff gel and drinking 2 cups of water. I think this was one of my big mistakes, at mile 5 I was in such discomfort from having to pee that I stopped at the port-a-potty so I wouldn't have to run the second half so uncomfortably. The temperature was pretty brutal and after the stop at the bathroom it took a bit to get warmed back up again, but once I did I was able to really pick up the pace. At the 12.5 mile mark the only other hiccup in the race set in, a horribly bad side cramp doubled me over. At this point I knew even though the pain was horrible I had to push through, I had seat a goal of 1:50 to finish and I wasn't going to let this cramp get in the way. After focusing on deep breathing I was able to work the cramp out and finish strong. What would you do differently?: Drink less water prior to the race and use the rest stops more for hydration during the race. Post race
Warm down: Ate a banana, drank a water and gatorade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Too much water prior to race. Event comments: The down side to this race was the lack of water stations. Doing the half marathon this wasn't a huge issue, but doing a full marathon I imagine this would make it very difficult. Woke up @ 5:45AM and drank a cup of coffee, ate a banana and oatmeal. This is my first race at a distance longer than an 8k so I wanted to take it easy on the morning meal since I knew nerves may be an issue.
Met up with my pacing buddy and shuttled over to the starting line.
This was my first attempt at a Half Marathon and I had trained hard for it and set a pretty aggressive goal. This added to my pre race nerves, thankfully I had a lot of family support reassuring I was going to hit my goal!
Did a few stretches and ran about 1/2 mile at a warm-up pace. I didn't want to push too hard since nerves were starting to set in.
