Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:45. Husband was up at 4:30. I was waiting for the alarm, but thank goodness Dave is an earlier riser cuz the alarm clock in the hotel was a piece of shite. I had arranged for a wakeup call as well which came at 4:48 :). I didnt really want to get out of bed. Dave turned on the light (ack) and threatened to flip the mattress. Oh, all right. Got up, made hotel coffee. Took care of business. Ate a bagel with PB and drank some water. Felt sick from the nasty meal we had eaten the night before at a a poor choice of local eateries.

Husband ran down to check out the lobby and scout for more food. He returned with a sticky bun (yuck) and some frozen french toast and a hard boiled egg. Nice work! and NO THANKS!

Paced the room stressing about whether or not we should have left for the race site or not. Okay, let's get going. Dave took my precious bike down and put it on the car. I checked my gear again and packed up our other stuff. We headed out.

We were immediately confused about which way to go to get on the highway. Ugh, stomach! Figured it out and we were on our way. Follow the other cars with bike strapped to them. Got to the exit and it was already backed to the highway. Streeeessssss!!! Parking!!!!!!!! Too many people!!!!!!

Okay, it wasnt really too bad. But this number of people all converging on this race site was almost more than I could handle. Thank god go for my husband/Swag wagon master.

We decided after we cruised the first lot and found no space that we would unload me, my bike and my gear and I would head to the race site while Dave found parking. Perfect.

Walked bike and gear to transition area along with 2000 other women and got set up in wave #8. Happy to find several of my teammates in the immediate area getting set up.

Time to find the portolet and take care of that business.
Event warmup:

Stood in the portolet line for at least half and hour. Always a good time chatting with fellow racers. 2000 women—not nearly enough portolets!!! I had to let those who were in earlier waves cut ahead so they wouldnt miss their starts.
Swim
  • 13m 44s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went really well. Our wave was really spread out and I had little trouble finding space to breath in or sighting my way around the course. It seemed to go really fast and I did much better than I expected. Although, based on my overall ranking, I still really need to work on my speed to bring it in line with the other disciplines. Very pleased with the efffort overall though.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Perhaps sight a little better, but this went better than expected.
Transition 1
  • 04m 52s
Comments:

The transition from swim to bike involved a fairly long run up from the beach to the transition area. I took time to put on my Teva's as recommended by my coaches to avoid hurting my feet. My bike was located fairly far back but I had counted the racks and had little trouble finding my bike thanks to the monkey balloon I had purchased the night before.

Had trouble getting out of transition as I had caught up to the slower folks in previous waves who were walking rather casually out of the area to the bike start. I reminded them that it was a race, but then felt bad as this is an all women's race and lot's of newbies, etc. and I should have been more supportive. BUT ITS A RACE!!!
What would you do differently?:

Choose a different type of shoe to use to run that long transition or just not bother with them. Maybe try riding without socks—this is always a struggle to get them on.
Bike
  • 39m 39s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.16 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike is my favorite part : ). I passed a lot of people and got passed by very few. You can tell by my overall bike rank that I enjoy this part of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Need to be faster getting clipped in. Consider not wearing socks. Consider getting tri specifid shoes.
Transition 2
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Again, a bit of a traffic jam in the transition area. I nearly knocked over a women who was asking "which way do I go" through shoot. I recommend they make the shoot a bit wider so that the women who don't know to follow the 2000 other women in the race can stop and chat direction with the race officials. : ) Sorry, but it is a race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 24m 25s
  • 2.8 kms
  • 08m 43s  min/km
Comments:

I need to do better with the run portion. Stopped to walk twice just to get my heartrate down so I could breath. Need to slow down a little or not use up so much on the bike maybe.

Had a nice race to the finish with a gal who refused to get beat. We sprinted it out and crossed at the same time. That was fun.
What would you do differently?:

NOT WALK!! at all.
Post race
Warm down:

Tried not to pass out after that sprint. Kept moving to get my heartrate down and feel better. Looped back to the finish to be with team members already done.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. I did well and beat my goal time of 1:30:00.

Event comments:

The shear size of this race made it stressful, but it was a fun experience and a good first full Sprint Tri. You gotta love Sally Edwards and her schtick. She really gets the gals fired up. This a great race for all women — not just athletes — but any women who wants to get out there and "tri" . A veritible lollapalooza of female love and support.

Course: This was a fun course with only one really tough hill. I was able to power up this hill and leave many racers behind. The rest was rolling hills for the most part with one kind of treachorous downhill that slowed many racers down but which I tried to take advantage of after the tough climb to get my MPH up.
