Pre-race routine:

Normal breakfast of a bagel with peanut butter and a banana before I headed to transition. Then I had a blueberry muffin about 45 minutes before the race start. Checked my bike over and set up my transition area relatively quickly. Everything went smoothly.
Event warmup:

Got in the water and swam for 5-10 minutes before lining up with my swim wave.
Swim
  • 30m 18s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a swim PR for me, so I was happy with it. I'm still trying to break that 30 minute barrier, but hopefully I'll get there soon. I got smashed in the face with an elbow within the first 100 meters and got a bloody nose. It bled for a while but eventually stopped on its own during the swim. I could see the blood on the bottom of my goggles as I swam though. My nose is still sore today as I write this three days later. I never usually go out hard in the swim, and in this race I did to try to fight for position and find some faster feet. This is the price I paid I guess.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I was pretty pleased. I think some of my poor navigation came from a couple of the people I picked to draft from. I don't think they swam particularly straight. I could have paid more attention to that.
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

I got an awesome wetsuit peeler. He ripped it off super quickly. Many thanks go out to him.
Bike
  • 2h 15m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 24.84 mile/hr
Comments:

I liked the bike course. It was challenging, technical at parts, and still pretty fast. The rough roads in spots were a little sketchy, especially on one or two fast descents, but as long as you paid attention it was navigable. I got stomach cramps about the 30 mile mark that lasted for 15 minutes or so, but it was nothing too serious.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I was pretty pleased with my bike split.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Pretty smooth transition. Nothing to make note of.
Run
  • 1h 28m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I am really disappointed in my run. I came to this race with my main goal being a solid run. I honestly still can't figure out why I ran so poorly. I don't feel like I overdid the bike. My first loop was actually not too bad. When I made the turn for loop two I really started to slow down. I managed to pick it up a bit on the way back, but it wasn't enough to make me happy. I was looking to run 3-4 minutes faster. This is going to be a priority between now and my next race, which isn't too far away. I am in need of a breakthrough run to prove to myself that I can do it.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm still not sure.

Event comments:

This is a great race. New Hampshire is a beautiful place, the course is fantastic and is a good mix between fun and challenging. There were plenty of aid stations on the bike and the run course and tons of volunteers to help out. It is one I will keep on my list to likely go back to next year.

Course: The course is essentially an out an back with a few little turn offs to add distance. The first 12 miles and the last 12 miles roll with a couple little kickers, but nothing crazy. There are also quite a few turns in this section of the course, making it fairly technical. The middle section is flat, straight, and pretty fast. There are a few patches of road that are in pretty bad condition, but other parts were freshly paved. I think it's a very fair and fun course.
