Swim
Comments: There is no way that the swim course is the full mile distance and most of our training group agreed. It is absolutely impossible that I swam a 1:23 pace because I am not that good of a swimmmer - I'm usually about 1:50 or worse. So, take the swim leg split with a grain of salt. Besides this detail, the swim portion of the race was nice, although maybe a little too shallow in spots. What would you do differently?: Keep taking swim lessons Transition 1
Comments: Put my shoes on before getting on bike. I intend to learn to put shoes on bike first and then slip into them while on the bike, but I wasn't going to try it in this race. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I loved the bike course - lots of variation to keep it interesting. What would you do differently?: I may have hit the steepest hill a little too hard but other than that bike went OK. Transition 2
Comments: Still need to learn to slip out of shoes while on the bike and then run barefoot thru T2, but not for this race. What would you do differently?: Learn to slip out of shoes while on bike. Run
Comments: I passed one of my training buddies on the bike (he crushes me on the swim) so I had the incentive of knowing he was going to try to run me down on the last leg. I still think I went a little too easy on the first half, but then picked it up after we passed each other near the turnaround. I got him by 45 seconds for the overall race. What would you do differently?: Push harder on the first half. Post race
Warm down: No active warm-down What limited your ability to perform faster: My swim sucks. Tony Schiller (former pro) won our age group and I was second behind him. He crushed me by about 6 minutes on the swim, he was 2 min faster on the bike, but I got him by about 1.5 min on the run. Learn to swim, get a tri bike with race wheels and then watch out. Event comments: I would highly recommend this race for either the sprint or long course. The race venue was the best I've seen so far. Last updated: 2006-07-10 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:30 and ate one Powerbar, 2 bananas, 1 bottle of Ensure and some Gatorade. Laid in bed for another half-hour or so and then got up to bring gear out to vehicle. It was starting to look like thunderstorms were about to roll in, so at about 5:40 we started to walk down to the transition area - the great part about this race is that it takes place at Ruttger's Sugar Lake Lodge and everything is right there. Racked the bikes at 6 AM and then headed back to the condo to wait out the rain. Stopped raining just before the race.
Only a little easy running before putting on the wetsuit and then swam just a few minutes before the start.
