Overcast
Total Time = 1h 44m 45s
Overall Rank = 125/1118
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 19/110
Pre-race routine:

Drank water, ate a gel 10 minutes before the start, did a little light jogging
Run
  • 24m 30s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 54s  min/km
Comments:

Started in a middle wave, so there were many people to zig-zag around on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Try to register earlier and hopefully get in one of the first five waves to reduce traffic/course congestion.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 47m 51s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 19.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Rough road, rough wind
What would you do differently?:

Drink more - I should have killed the bottle with a mile to go - instead I still had about 1/4 of it left. Bad mistake on a warm race.
Transition 2
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

A couple of people (volunteers? spectators?!) were standing in transition - in the middle of the area I needed to run my bike through to get to my rack. Aside from that, the heat and humidity were beginning to take their toll on me. Lastly, the gusty wind made it hard to rack the bike - it took three attempts to get it to stay put.
What would you do differently?:

Yell at the people to get the eff out of the way long before I got to them and stopped. Grab my spare bottle and drink a bit from it and dump the rest of its cold contents all over me to bring my temperature down.
Run
  • 27m 39s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 32s  min/km
Comments:

Terrible run. I started suffering from heat cramps almost immediately.
What would you do differently?:

Dump more cold water on myself/drink more in trans to dodge (hopefully) the cramps that came later.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate bananas, and drank some water / energy drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and humidity and wind...ugh

Event comments:

I put my rank according to the number that started. About half that total finished due to the fact the organizers shut down trans at some point due to the heat. Given the conditions, even though it was just a 5K course, a second water stop probably would have been a good idea - not necessarily for drinking, but just to dump over myself to cool down.
