Swim
Comments: They had the volunteer fire department (ie 20-y-o guys with a complex) out on jet skiis to keep an eye on the swimmers. We first started and they just putted around doing their job. Sometime half-way through the race, they must have thought that watching us swim was boring, so they decided to ride the skiis in the middle of the course (middle of the triangle). During the rest of the swim, there was so many waves and current, it really made it hard to swim. It kept knocking me off course. I would take a few strokes then look up to sight and be headed in a direction not even close to where I needed to go. Every time I looked up, I was way off course. I was pissed. What would you do differently?: I really just need to practice. More time in the pool. I did ok for it being my first OWS in a race. Transition 1
Comments: They didn't record time during transitions! WTF? What would you do differently?: T1 went smoothly. Bike
Comments: I think I left my attention in the water. About half way through the first lap I had to lecture myself. My head wasn't in it (I don't know where it went). I finally snapped out of it, pulled my concentration back together and raced my race. I need to make sure that doesn't happen again. During a hill climb, I made a bad gear change and lost my chain. I had to stop and fix it - AGAIN! I also had to pee for most of the bike ride. What would you do differently?: CONCENTRATE! Transition 2
Comments: Again, no time recorded...I think it was added to my run time. Run
Comments: This was a slow run for me. It was amazing how many people I saw walking on the run. I guess this distance of race is a little harder on the body. I ended up catching Zac on the run. His shins were hurting pretty bad. He had about a mile and a half left. He was not doing well. I still had to pee. What would you do differently?: Run at the beginning. Not jog. I must have still been in conservation mode. Post race
Warm down: I went and grabbed some water, then headed toward the bathroom. I spent most of the race having to pee. As I walked out, I saw Zac cross the finish line. I didn't get to cheer him on (when you gotta go, you gotta go?!?) as he crossed, but I could tell he was really glad to be done. We went and got some water and fruit then walked around for a little while til the HR came down. What limited your ability to perform faster: Jet skiis on swim La-La-Land on bike Over-pacing myself on run Event comments: I was a little dissappointed in my time. I wanted to be a few minutes faster, but I am happy with how I did. Most importantly, I had fun. Last updated: 2006-07-12 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:30, got some breakfast, and talked with some of the other triathletes at the hotel. They informed me that this course is rather challenging, with lots of hills n'stuff. So that didn't help with the morning-of butterflies. Packed up the car and headed toward the event. We got there and still had to pick up our packets. Got our cool guy body markings and race caps.
It was kind weird being one of the few females at the event. They were doing a 5k before the tri so there was a whole bunch of non-triathletes around. I felt like all of the non-tri women were staring at me like I had 3 heads. I guess I did look funny walking around in a spandex suit with numbers written on my arms and legs. They were probably staring at everyone else the same way, but I just noticed them staring at me and wondering what was going through their head.
Found a good spot in the transition area, set up the perfect transition, got some more water, went pee, etc. I really wanted some Starbucks coffee, but I didn't think that was a good pre-race thing to do since it was almost 90F outside.
Walked down to lakeside with Zac and got in the water. Looking at the race course, it looked really long, but whatever. We swam out to the first buoy (150 yrds?) and back. I had to have a little conversation with myself to keep from panicking and to keep my stroke under control. It seemed to work ok...I didn't panic.
