Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15 am, out the door by 4:30. Tried Belvita Breakfast Biscuits for pre-race breakfast and 1% milk. They've been working pretty well during the week, not sure if I'll use them again on race day.
Event warmup:

Put on wetsuit and a long sleeve t-shirt and walked to swim start. I know I should warm up, but I never do.
Swim
  • 08m 4s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt like this was a pretty good swim for me. Made the first turn in the middle of the group then started swimming and stayed fairly on line with the 2nd buoy. Felt like I was swimming by myself since most everyone else got sucked in by the current and ended up swimming in the shallow water near shore.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 1
  • 04m 48s
Comments:

T1 included the run from the relocated swim all the way to the bike exit, .38 of a mile. Fastest T1 in division so I can't complain. I even thought to put my helmet on as I was taking off my wetsuit just so I could mark "yes" on this RR.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure shoes are ALL the way clipped onto pedals. Almost took a spill when my right cleat flew off the pedal as I was tightening the strap.
Bike
  • 30m 38s
  • 9.5 miles
  • 18.61 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the one segment where my lack of training really limited my performance. Could not maintain aero position because of neck and shoulder discomfort. Could not maintain cadence in the mid to upper 80's. Started to get sore in the seat as well.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Normal T2 for me. Took a few extra seconds to wipe off my feet and make sure the tongue on my shoes was flat. Paid off because I did not have any rubbing or blisters after the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not stub my toe jumping off the bike. No blood, just a quick shot of pain as I ran into transition.
Run
  • 37m 6s
  • 3.63 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The course is about a half mile longer than the normal Ft. DeSoto run course but well worth it to be able to run up and over the fort. Held a very steady pace for the first 3 miles then actually had a little kick the last half mile.
What would you do differently?:

Again, train.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line, grabbed a water, then walked back to the swim start to retrieve my sandals and t-shirt.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

LACK OF TRAINING
LACK OF MOTIVATION
POOR NUTRITION
EXCESS WEIGHT

Event comments:

RD made a very difficult decision to relocate the swim due to rough conditions rather than cancel the swim. Even though it took about 20 addition minutes to reset the course, it was the right thing to do and maintained the integrity of the race overall.

Swimming

Age Group: 2/6
Overall: 202/574
Performance: Good
Suit: 2XU Wetsuit
Course: Swim was moved and shortened due to rough seas in the Gulf. 3 straight days of 12-20 mph west winds had things quite stirred up. Fortunately there is a semi-protected lagoon just south of the normal Gulf swim location. Beach start with a knee/thigh deep water sprint to the first buoy then a hard right with a straight 400+ yard swim to the exit. South to north swim across the incoming tide.
