Swim
Comments: I started a little back from the front and outside. Since I'm not that fast I would rather the people who are going to pass me, do it at first. One big guy started to lead off and I just followed him. I breathe only on the left and following his bubbles/getting a bit of draft was very comforting. Eventually he lost me and I had to navigate by myself. About half way out I started coming up on people who must have been in the previous wave. Occasionally I would pass one the rest of the way. About 3/4 the way in a guy sorta passed me. I think we might have merged together because he was not going fast enough to be from the next wave. I let him pass and followed him all the way in. I think on the way out I passed the first guy that left me behind. In the middle of the swim it started lightening and a loud thunder blast made me stop and look around. It rained for about 10 minutes. What would you do differently?: Learn to breathe on the right. Be a more solid swimmer. Transition 1
Comments: I was pretty tired from the swim and did not run too fast. In one move I put my shotblocks in the pocket and sunglasses on. Helmet on while I was stepping on the wetsuit. My wetsuit got a bit stuck on my ankles. I keep my bike shoes on the bike. Getting them on was a piece of cake. What would you do differently?: Bit more glide on ankles. Bike
Comments: I really tried to keep my cadence up. I'm more of a masher but wanted to try to go with the theory that my legs will be saved for the run. Not too many passed me. I had to slow gatoraid and shot block intake, I was feeling like I was going to puke. I love hills, get to pass loads of people. Funny, going down a steep hill passes many as well, seems like some coast or are afraid to go too fast or something. About 10 miles in a guy passes me with a rear disk wheel and the 808s in the front. He doesnt really take off so I ride up next to him and tell him he must be a sucky swimmer (he was in my same heat)and ask if he likes the wheels. He said he did not feel worthy of them yet since just got them. I told him that to keep the universe stable he cant let anyone pass him who has nondisk wheels. He said that if I pass, I'll only be the second person to pass. We cat and mouse for a bit, I beat him on hills. Some dude on a heavy looking road bike passes us both. I'm at my limit and tell him he cant let that happen and go get him. Another dude passed me from an earlier heat, my reply was 'a really sucky swimmer'. I chase and pass him and never saw him again. Toward the end the short and long courses merge. I got passed by a short course woman and let her pace me. At the last mile I get my feet on top of my shoes and stand a bit and try to stretch my legs. What would you do differently?: Race a little harder. Dont get out of my race and get caught up in individual races. Practice at higher cadence and race that at a higher cadence. Transition 2
Comments: I had to run a long way down to my bike and a long way back. I haven't mastered pushing the bike by the seat. Was a bit wobbly. This actually pisses me off. The fastest T2 time was 14 seconds; he was right by the door. I have my feet out of my shoes when I get off the bike. I just have a lot longer to run. What would you do differently?: Learn to push the bike by the seat. Learn to jump off the bike. Run
Comments: At the start of the run I got to watch a dude come in looking like he was coming in perfect; feet on shoes, screaming in. Well he must have locked his front brake becasue he totally endod and faceplanted doing about 5 mph. I ran and sucked on a gel for the first mile. I could not finish it, just ready to yack. I did not feel as bad at first as I have but damn it hurts. I just never really felt that good. I just feel like I'm plodding along and dont have that much power. My times are better than I could have hoped for. Makes me think that the distance was off. What would you do differently?: Put superglue on the inside of my left foot. It worked to keep my right foot in ok shape (I dont wear socks). Use a fuel belt; I just cant drink running out of a dixie cup. Post race
Warm down: Stagger about drinking everything in sight. I got asked several times if I needed medical attention. I guess that I gave it my all and looked that way. What limited your ability to perform faster: Endurance. Top end speed. Event comments: Very very organized. No drink stations on the bike? I did not need it but it was supposed to be really hot. Really, really dont like the transition in inequity. Why should everyone run a different distance? Last updated: 2006-07-16 12:00 AM

Night before had everything in the car but poweraid. Watched a movie and tried to sleep a bit earlier about midnight.
Cereal for breakfast at 5AM, left at 5:15. Drank 3/4 liter poweraid on the 1 1/2 hour drive.
When I got there I was glad to have a nice parking spot. I walked right up to a transistion area, asked where to could I put my stuff and was directed to set up where ever. Once I checked in I found out that I had just setup in the short course. So after marking I moved over to the long transition area. I found out the most distubing part of the race; the higher the heat number the farther you were from BOTH bike out and run out. Thus I probably ran another 1/5 mile than those in heat 1.
