Swim
Comments: I was really happy with my swim. My goal to stay relaxed and expend as little energy as possible. I did little to no kicking, took really long strokes and sighted pretty well. The whole swim went smooth with very little contact. What would you do differently?: I definately need to up my swim training. I would like to be able to race this portion of the race rather than just surviving it. Transition 1
Comments: No problems here. It was a fairly tricky run to the road but managed to not trip on any roots. Bike
Comments: The bike was a four loop course on really flat roads. I promised myself I would go easy and never push the pace. I stayed in the aerobars the entire time and was doing a good job just spinning away. About 3/4's of the way through the third loop, the leaders of the race caught (I imagine Jorge was there but I have not met him yet). They weren't going that much faster than me so I stayed with them until they turned into the finish and I went off on my fourth loop. Last loop was pretty uneventful but I went a bit faster than the first three. What would you do differently?: It was my game plan to ride conservatively but I might have been a little too conservative. I probably could have pushed harder without much effect on my run but this race was about getting used to the distance so I am fine with that. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: It was really hot by the beginning of the run and I do not do well in the heat. My legs were feeling pretty good but I was just really hot. I started off well and picked off about 15 people in the first two miles. However, I think it was around mile 4 (I didn't see any mile marker) were there were some strecthes in the sun and I really started to fade. A couple of people passed me at this point but I was just out of gas. When we got back into the shade, I could pick up the pace but I was pretty spent and was just looking for the run to be over. What would you do differently?: First time at this distance so I just need a little adaption to the 6 mile run at the end. A few more bricks will help along with it not being 90 degrees. Post race
Warm down: I was so hot I just sought out shade and drank some water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat and inexperience at this distance...not much I can do about the heat. Event comments: This was a very well run race (as are most Firm races) and a fun course. Their description of a flat and fast course is spot on. I am very happy with my results and as usual I walk away with a whole bunch of things to work on. This was an experiment race before Cranberry and I think I got out of it exactly what I wanted. Got up at 4:30 and left by five for the two hour drive
Did a quick run and then a little stretching. Jumped in the water and swam a little just to make sure the goggles were fine.
