Pre-race routine:

The event was scheduled to start at 9 and was .5 miles from where we're living. My two girls decided that morning that they wanted to do their first 5K, so we walked over at 8:30 to get them registered--a free race for all 14 and unders.
Event warmup:

No official warm up other than going to a different area for registration, another area for packet pick-up, another area for bibs and yet a fourth area for chips. (Leave it to a bunch of med students to come up with the most inefficient pre-race pick up area ever :)

The girls were very excited and needed a lot of help getting their chips and numbers on, but we did it with two minutes to spare before the gun went off. Woo-hoo!

Comments:

I ran this as a baseline 5K for Shane's running challenge group. I have not been running a lot this winter, and it showed in this race. A year ago I ran a 22:07 on a slightly less challenging course, so I was expecting this run to be somewhere between 22:15- and 23:00 given my lack of volume over the winter. I was a little bummed when I saw my time, but not surprised. Lack of volume, a little winter weight, no warm-up, and the day before my period--a perfect storm for mediocrity. I should have my work cut out for me in Shane's group, and I'm really looking forward to dialing this back down.
What would you do differently?:

I lined up too far to the back and started my kick too early based on my current run fitness, but OA I am pleased with how I ran the race and my effort, just not my current run fitness.
Post race
Warm down:

As soon as I finished my race, I doubled back to find my kids so I could run the last bit of their races with them. My 8 yo was ahead of the 7, so we ran the last half mile together which was so awesome! She looked GREAT, and is totally built like a distance runner (unlike me). When we finished we both double backed until we saw the 7yo, and then finished with her. The girls took 1st and 2nd in the under 9 age group, and I took 2nd in mine, so--with our prize money we actually recouped the entry fees +$10.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of winter run training.

Event comments:

Pre-race pick up was a cluster, but other than that it was a totally fine race. $25 and 2 minutes from my house bumps it up a few notches in the race eval.

Performance: Average
Course: I have only ever done one other stand-alone 5K, so I don't have a lot to compare this on to, but I would way this was a challenging course to pace because of the last mile. The first mile was pretty rolling with some decent downhills, the second mile was flat, and there were three significant uphills in the last mile.
