Swim
Comments: This was my first open water swim and my first time in a wetsuit for a triathlon. Long story short, all of my training in the pool of twice a week pretty religiously for 4 months went right out the window. I basically wanted to quit trialthlons all together at that point but knew my wife wouldn't give me a ride home if I quit. I went back to basic water survival mode and just kept moving forward. From motion sickness to drinking 850 gallons of saltwater....Needless to say I felt like a little sissy out there with nothing but excuses. What would you do differently?: Stop making excuses put my head down and start swimming. I will be better prepared for next race. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was only as slow do to me being disoriented coming out of the swim poorly and feeling down about it. Everything else went right as planned and no hiccups what so ever. Good bike position, good lay out, good run out. What would you do differently?: Come out of the water with a purpose Bike
Comments: I only rode as slow as I did thinking back to all I read and that I needed to stay conservative. I had energy to spare even after my run. What would you do differently?: I'm a stronger cyclist and should have trusted my body over other peoples game plans for my race. But for the first one I stayed conservative and it didn't go bad .....just not as great as I had hoped. Transition 2
Comments: I was in and out. Time to reload my Gu and take off. What would you do differently?: I would remove my arms coolers there instead of on the run and storing them in a pocket. Added weight, even though minimal is still added weight. Run
Comments: I'm a runner at heart and once I put my shoes on, I did everything I could to make up for the race that had gone wrong to start and so so in the middle. I felt strong and could have carried that pace for another 8 miles comfortably. Minus a small blister in the back of my right heel, both bike and run were sockless, the run couldn't have gone any better. I was having a blast. What would you do differently?: Might use socks for IMTX Post race
Warm down: Found the Wife and went walking around for a bit. Went and got the gear and headed out to find some food and drive home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being out of my element in the water cost me 10 - 15 minutes easy. Not riding more aggressive and worrying about energy when my body was telling me that I was ok. Event comments: The only thing I didn't like was getting out bikes out. It took just a little bit but we had to wait to cross the run path. I would have liked to get my gear and leave once I was ready. Had this been a body crushing race, I wouldn't want to wait around. Everything else, went amazing. Last updated: 2014-04-08 12:00 AM

I woke up at 4:30am and had a lengthy drive from about 20 miles outside of Galveston. I wasn't too nervous this being my first Half Ironman but just mentally going over in my head what I needed to do to finish strong and hopefully few mistakes. Outside of a muffins and some Coffee, I didn't want to overload myself and half a heavy stomach going into the water. I also had an 820am start so waiting around I didn't want to over eat due to nerves.
I didn't warm up. I usually don't before a race, it makes me more nervous then stretches me out. I should warm up more but never actually get around to it.
