Steamboat Triathlon
82F / 28C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 50m 36s
Overall Rank = 59 /
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 5/12
Pre-race routine:

Only got a quick run in before the event. Was concerned about water temperature and did not get in before. Was not an issue and I should have done my normal 3-500 meter warm up
Event warmup:

short run and stretch
Swim
  • 39m 7s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

warm up; turn over arms more quickly last 200-300 meters
Transition 1
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

Long transition; suite stuck on ankles. I needed to turn over arms a little more towards the end of the swim as I was not steady getting on bike. 5/41 for age/overall rank
What would you do differently?:

grease up ankles better
Bike
  • 2h 43m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.55 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

spin a little higher cadence
Transition 2
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

almost went down despite a perfect dismount...took a couple of steps and realized my legs weren't there yet. 5/30 for age/overall rank
What would you do differently?:

spun at higher cadence/lower gear last half-mile to get legs right
Run
  • 2h 21m 17s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Well supported with plenty of water, gels, gatorade. Coke on second to last aid station. Can't stress enough that this run was hilly and tough
What would you do differently?:

Train hills a lot harder. Probably hardest run I've done for any triathlon (including Xterras)
Post race
Warm down:

long walk back to transition, mild stretch and ice packs to calves. Long car ride back to Breckenridge didn't help :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wasn't prepared for how hilly the course was; elevation map would have been key on the website

Event comments:

Extremely difficult trail run. Well supported and an exciting event. The water temperature was not an issue; wore a wetsuit and neoprene skull cap under my age group cap and had no issues. I added detailed analysis as it is now on the website.

Overall, great race and well-planned regarding the course and support on the course. Be prepared as there is not much in the way of vendors for last minute items and the great wrench at Orange Peel Bikes was busy, busy, busy...another wrench would have been useful. Post race was average and there is a lengthly walk back to transition. Elevation maps of the bike and run would definitely be useful as there are MULTIPLE difficult climbs on the run. I will definitely do it again...I will just be prepared for that run next time :) Thank you bunches to all the volunteers and Todd and Heather...great time and will be back next year. i work for MedExpress Urgent Care. My first exposure to Heather was in 2007 when she took 1st place at the MedExpress Mountaineer Triathlon in West Virginia. I was the driving force behind getting our company to sponsor that event; she was a huge name and really made an impact on that event. Very grateful.

Suit: yes
Course: Bouys are smaller that most other events I am used to, but I didn't have an issue sighting. I did see several competitors zig-zag so it may have been an issue to some, especially if you don't normally sight well. All left hand turns. Easy to see and even on a very sunny day, glare wasn't a big issue

Course: hilly with a couple of climbs. !4 miles out to make two out-and-backs for the 56 miles. nice grade on the way back to transition to allow you to hammer all the way back. Aid stations with bottled water, gels and waffles. Well supported about every 10 miles. One hairpin not marked well at about mile 6-7...flat spotted my tires to not end up in the weeds
