Pre-race routine:

got up VERY early (4:15) and drove to Fulshear.
Event warmup:

light stretching. The water was too cold to swim in!
Swim
  • 03m 52s
  • 200 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

My time was actually 3:16 in the swim, but the run to T1 with the timing mat was a bit away from the pool which adds to the swim time. I really hit 1:33/100m pace which is fast for me. The water was so cold that I think we were swimming faster to get out!

Transition 1

Comments:

T1 went good!
Bike
  • 29m 28s
  • 8 miles
  • 16.29 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike was terrible. I started off great around 19-20 mph, but then tanked about 1/3 (1/2?) into it. It also didn't help that a kid turned around early at a spot where the cones stopped and I turned around with him thinking this was it...which blew my mind since it was just in the wide open with no actual indications that it was the turn around spot. I lost a minute there.
What would you do differently?:

get a bit more familiar with the bike path. LOSE WEIGHT instead of gain it from last season.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

I didn't have the "Yankz" in my shoes this tri and it showed. I was much slower on this transition than I normally would be. I got a cramp, too, putting my socks on.
What would you do differently?:

use Yankz!
Run
  • 18m 22s
  • 2 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't have my Garmin on the run and just ran by feel. It went fine actually and is my fasted pace so far in a tri....even if slow for most others. The Intervals have been paying off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

walked and drank water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

weight gain affecting bike

Event comments:

This is a pretty good race. Throwing the color things at people didn't really appeal to me, but a lot of others liked it. The only issue I have with this race director is that too often the biking gets into traffic. We're literally riding on a shoulder of a farm to market road with cars passing us on the left in the main lane. ????? There were cops at the intersections but it just isn't enough. There needs to be more clearly marked off biking areas. Plus, areas of the shoulder had debris and mud all over them...meaning no effort was made to make sure it was clear for biking. I'd do it again, but I think it takes away from the quality of the race. Also, the volunteers seemed a bit too young and generally unenthusiastic compared to what I'm used to.
