Pre-race routine:

Light breakfast.
Event warmup:

Light Stretching
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1500 meters
  • / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was Canceled due to raw sewage being dumped into the Potomac River the night prior due to heavy rains and flash flooding.
What would you do differently?:

Actually Swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

T1 was a run into transition in lieu of the swim due to the river not being suitable to swim in that morning.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run in a little faster. My back was pretty sore which slow things down a bit. However, i didn't waste time with putting my gloves on in the transition area and that seemed to help some.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 7s
  • 40 kms
  • 32.82 km/hr
Comments:

Felt Pretty good on the bike. Might have been able to push a little harder but I had a real solid run effort so I can't complain too much.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have pushed a little harder on the last 5 miles or so of the race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

My back flared up in going into T2 and made me wonder if I was going to be able to run at all. Just getting out of T2 and finishing the race was a major accomplishment.
What would you do differently?:

Considering how bad my lower back hurt just getting through T2 was accomplishment enough. Could have been better but all things considered it was good enough.
Run
  • 52m 19s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 14s  min/km
Comments:

Real solid run effort. First Triathlon 10K that felt like I was running the 10k rather than surviving the 10k. Got passed by a far amount of folks on the run but I was able to concentrate on my race and just run my race. It mut have worked because the finish time was just off of my 10k PR time.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I could stepped up the pace a little earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bum lower back killed me in transition and getting off of the bike.

Event comments:

Nations is a good race and it is well done. The problem is that it is in DC and is somewhat held hostage to the limitations that the City puts on it. For example the sewage issue in the river was beyond their control. They don't have any other options for the swim location so what are you going to do. It would be nice to have the race be more in the monument core but that would impact the city too much and would never be approved by the city.
