Pre-race routine:

Got home from work and ate a half a bagel with peanut butter and played with my son for a while. Got dressed and got my gear together and headed out to the race.
Event warmup:

Short jog, just to get warmed up. I decided not to get in the water beforehand, as I always have trouble with goggles fogging when I've been in and out of the water, and I just wanted this to be relaxing and fun.

Comments:

My goal for this was really just not to freak out about being smoked by everyone - to relax into it and enjoy it. I guess it worked, cause I cut some time off from last month and came out feeling fresher, too.
What would you do differently?:

I can push a little harder than I did. Now that I know I can settle in and do the distance just fine, I should try to get a longer, smoother stroke earlier, as I didn't really get full strokes until at least half way through.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Hey, I didn't have to sit down this time. Woot! My family was at T1 waiting for me. So, I spent a little time talking to my son while transitioning. "Mommy, did you have fun swimming?" "Yes, sweetie, I did, thanks!"
What would you do differently?:

I sort of spaced pulling off goggles and cap while running out of the water & to the transition. Doh. Oh well.
Run

  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I got passed by a lot of people on the run. But, I did pass a couple of them, too. I need to work on more speed runs, as my running really isn't very fast yet. I did have one great experience. Some random stranger ran me to the end. We pushed each other and made the end much stronger than it otherwise would have been. I beat my rabbit - the person that I was trying to beat last time and didn't make it. Woot!
What would you do differently?:

I need to trust myself that I can do a faster pace and go for it!
Post race
Warm down:

I drank some water and went back out on the course to find Siri and then ran her in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I should skip the post-work snack for these races. I do best on runs with nothing in my stomach. I was also recovering from a little virus and felt kind of crampy throughout.

Event comments:

These are fun races - cheap and well run. Most of the participants are very fast. But, those of us that aren't so fast are still welcomed and encouraged. Good vibes at these things.
