Swim
Comments: First time ever swimming in a wetsuit. The first 200 m were good. I felt good. The arms started feeling the wetsuit at that point and I also got "swam over" by someone who wasn't sighting well at all. Cause my heart rate to spike and I just couldn't relax after that. Struggled the rest of the way. What would you do differently?: I say this after every open water race, but get more open water swimming experience. I get better each time, but I still need more improvement. Transition 1
Comments: First time with a wetsuit in T1. Got stuck on the heels and chip. Lesson learned. If possible, chip under the suit and also step on legs of suit to pull feet out. What would you do differently?: Work on getting out of the suit quicker. Bike
Comments: Good ride. Felt great. Probably could have pushed more, but this effort hit me on the back half of the run. What would you do differently?: More time in the saddle and brick workouts. I've been horrible about my training for the last month and a half. Transition 2
Comments: Good T2. Can't complain. What would you do differently?: Nothing much. Run
Comments: Took almost a half mile to get my legs under me. Felt good until around mile 2. That's when everything caught up to me. Passed by 2 people of my age group. Pushed through the last mile into the finish. What would you do differently?: More brick workouts and get better about my training. Work and family have been overwhelming and made training very difficult. Post race
Warm down: Walked around the shaded area while everyone waited for the last athlete to pass through T2. Luckily the event provided a light recovery jacket that helped with the really low temperatures. It was VERY chilly. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of fitness. If I had kept the amount and frequency of training that I was doing from Feb. to Apr., I would have been much faster. Event comments: Great race. Beautiful venue. There were not a huge amount of competitors. I would definitely do this race again. They say it's the "Best kept secret" in the St. Louis area. I definitely have to agree. Perfect early season race. Typical routine before a race. Left the house at 4:30 for the long drive to the site.
Swam in the shallows of the lake to get acclimated to the cold water. I needed to warm up more though to get used to the wetsuit. It was my first time swimming in the wetsuit. It came back to haunt me.
