Swim
Comments: I swam a little slower than both my HIM's last year, but the water conditions were much rougher here. I swam pretty good and smooth right up until I rounded the last bouy, then I kept taking in water and had to pull aside and almost puke... What would you do differently?: No bilateral breathe into a cross wave situation. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was fine. I was a little slow after almost puking during the swim. I chose not to squirrel mount onto bike since my bike spot was 20' from the mount line. Bike
Comments: We had a strong tail wind on the way out, and more like a cross on the way back. I took 3 Gatorade bottles and drank them during the ride and 1 gel. I need to work on taking in more calories on the bike. My HR was around 140, when I was shooting for 135ish, but I figured it was race day nerves. I think I should have slowed down on the bike and followed the 135HR plan. What would you do differently?: Tone it down some. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was okay. Getting off the bike was good, but getting shoes on took too much time. Run
Comments: Not a good run. Started out strong, but quickly faded. I think I am killing my run with bad nutrition and too fast biking. I walked a few times, very disheartening. I will be working on bike nutrition during the summer and have to do better to executing my plan. I'm should be more in the 1:40 range, not 1:55 for the 13.1. What would you do differently?: Bike better, eat more. Post race
Warm down: Found family and gave hugs. Expressed disappointment in my race. More in my ability to follow my own race plan to set myself up for a strong finish, not a "it's killing me" finish. Hard for non racers to understand the difference. My goal was sub 5:15 and I got it, so that was good. But I know I could have done better, or atleast finished stronger if I didn't shoot for great bike split. What limited your ability to perform faster: TONS!!!!! I am will switching my training to have a longer, and more nutrition focuses weekend bike ride. A few more longer runs thrown in to the mix. Getting a power meter to help nail down intensity levels. Event comments: Other than my performance, I loved this race. It's close to home, fun for the family and most people I talked to PR'd their HIM time. Last updated: 2014-05-13 12:00 AM

Stayed at Moody Gardens, which was a really nice experience for the rest of the family and me of course. Got up at 4:45 and had a gross bowl of cold oatmeal quietly in the room. Headed out to transition with no problems. My bike was on the end of the rack, and that was a perfect position.
Got lost making it to swim after a restroom stop at the hotel. Had to book it to make it, but then found I had plenty of time.
