Overall Rank = 363/2000
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 30/157
Pre-race routine:

Biked course on SAT and even road across Golden Gate Bridge. Stayed at hostel which is right next to venue (Ft. Mason) and walking distance to warf district. Great location and for $80 had single room and free parking!
Event warmup:

Ride from hostel to event
Swim
  • 40h 40m
  • 2640 yards
  • 1h 32m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water wasn't as cold as expected, trained in 67 but the 58 wasn't bad. No issues with numbness. Full wetsuit and no extra stuff. Felt like the chop\swells were excessive but this might be normal. Drank alot of salt water! Hard sighting due to fog. Got on boat early to get prime spot to get off first.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Trained in full wetsuit in cold water.
Transition 1
  • 09m 21s
Comments:

Used pink duct tape and striped run bag, easy to find! Used easy slip on shoes to the 'real T1'. Couldn't find bike even though i checked it out the day before on which flag was near rack.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear shell jacket and gloves. Took too long putting on. Used only because i got cold the day before during pre-ride.
Bike
  • 1h 01m
  • 18 miles
  • 17.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Used Ritchey Breakaway road bike with no aerobars. Steel bike that breaks down and fits into airline legal suitcase. Worked well with compact x 27 rear cass. Road surface is a mess with cracks, pot holes, chip seal....but the course is marked with those hazards. One racer went down on decent, EMS had to be summoned. Hill training a must!
What would you do differently?:

Zero, didn't have to pay to rent or ship bike. Like to have had longer bike course cause us old guys take a while to warm up.
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

long T2
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 1h 03m
  • 8 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Fun, but lots of hills. Wasn't as congested as I expected so passing was no issue. Good aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Got cold after some chow but the boat bag was available.

Event comments:

Fun and organized race that everyone should put on their bucket list. I didn't put any expectation on race but only to have fun, which i did.
