Swim
Comments: Gun went off and I took off fast. Very minimal contact and I got out front quickly. I was waiting for the wave of people to start coming by me, but it never did. Very strange. 3 guys went off the front and then I was with one other person. It felt like we were all alone out there as we rounded the first buoy. Unfortunately, the middle leg was directly in the sun and even with tinted goggles you could not see anything. I just kept swimming and hoped I was going int he right direction. I swam straight at the sun assuming that if the buoys weren't that way, I would see them. It appeared to work as I lifted my head to check with kayakers and they seemed to indicate I was ok. I was happy to finally find the turn buoy and see the line to the finish. I drafted most the 3rd leg and felt really good about my swim. Time was expected, but didn't expect that to put me 4th person into transition. What would you do differently?: Stop second guessing on the middle leg and just swim. Transition 1
Comments: Decent transition. Nothing special. Bike
Comments: Goal was 190w, but I knew there were a lot of hills and especially early on I would have to hold higher. I was in the 200w range for a long time and although I didn't feel amazing, I was able to hold it. I alternated gu and mini cliff bars every 20-30min. and threw in 4 salt tabs and 2 tylenol. Lots of cyclists coming by me like I was standing still, but I was holding a reasonable pace/effort, so I stuck to my plan. The amount of mucus that came out of my head was a little jarring. I described it as feeling like caterpillars crawling out of my sinuses! So gross, but happy to finally get cleared out after a bad week. The final 10 miles was actually the best I felt. Watt avg. came down to 188 at one point after a few downhills I decided to tuck on, but got on the edge of my saddle for the final run in and was passing people for the first time in the race. What would you do differently?: ? Transition 2
Comments: God transition. There were wetsuits everywhere so that took a few extra seconds to clear away my rack/box, but still solid. What would you do differently?: n/a Run
Comments: Only goal was to break 5 hrs, so I knew it was possible, but I also knew I had some work to do. Quassy run course is brutal. All rolling with several serious climbs. The good part is that temps were reasonable, and course had good portions of shade. First few miles were great and even the first major climb ~mile 4 went well. I was actually holding back/steady for a while knowing I was ok on pace and the end would need some reserves. I started to fade around 8 and then after the downhill at 9 where you come back by transition I was really working. I made a goal of catching 1 runner every mile, so that helped to focus on that. At mile 10 I saw I had 21+ min to break 5hrs, so I needed 7min miles. That sounded reasonable until mile 11 was 8+min! I didn't panick, and luckily it turned out the mile was marked long, so I was ok. When the big mile 13 climb came I was starting to run scared. I was envisioning missing it by 30 seconds, so I didn't let up on the gas for the entire hill and run in to the finish. Saw people cheering and made the turn careful not to trip on the tracks. Turns out I made it with a minute to spare and was able to claw my way back to 3rd AG! What would you do differently?: nothing. Great run, but would be nice if I could ride with the other guys and not have to run them down every time. Post race
Warm down: Cheered on others. Craig and I managed to grab the cooler of beer and catch Heidi and K coming by Event comments: Great race. Good swag, good location, etc. Definitely recommended. Last updated: 2014-05-20 12:00 AM

K and I drove up to Sissy's Friday night and stayed over in Westtown. Then on Saturday, we went straight to race site to chaeck in. Met up with Craig, Amy, Ben, and Heidi. Amy and Heidi were also racing, so we did a short brick and checked in our bikes. We were planning on swimming, but the swim closed at 2pm and to be honest no one was excited to get into the cold water at that point anyway. After that we went back to Nate/Heidi's for a good pasta dinner and got to bed early.
Woke up ~4:30am and left ~5am. Had a few bars for breakfast and got everything all set up. Didn't have a ton of time, but also not rushed. I had been suffering from allergies really badly all week, but felt pretty good race morning. Said good luck to the ladies and went to the beach. I did a few minutes warmup just to test the goggles and check water temp. Everything was great, but I did realize with 90 seconds to go the start area was actually on the other side of a fence that you had to walk around and go over a mat to enter. Quickly made my way over and had ~10 seconds til the gun.
