Swim
Comments: people were spastic at the start, but I kept chugging along at controlled pace, things spaced out pretty well about 1/3 of the way through the race. I was in the first main wave which helped. Had some trouble sighting the way home since I knew I had to round that final buoy, but there were no buoys guiding you from not drifting too far to shore--ended up popping up a lot to get bearings. Overall, happy with first olympic distance OWS. What would you do differently?: be conscious of bouys in both directions ahead of time; if I had just had better sense of how far I should be between shore and right buoys on way back it wouldn't have been an issue (and wasn't all that big an issue as it was) Transition 1
Comments: struggled a bit getting my top on, maybe should have just skipped it; ideally I'll find a top that I feel comfortable swimming in that doesn't have the zipper issue. Wasn't sure when I could actually get on my bike--probably didn't slow me down, but got me stressed a little. What would you do differently?: check where the mount/dismount lines are beforehand; don't put top on. Bike
Comments: could stand to work this harder; intentionally went controlled on first lap, given my difficulties with run recently, but never really picked it up; bike was pretty middle of the pack; left leg was a little numb at times What would you do differently?: pick up the pace Transition 2
Comments: fine; What would you do differently?: someday figure out the taking feet out of shoes before dismounting trick Run
Comments: first respectable run; wanted to keep it under 50 minutes and did; first 5K may have averaged low 7 minutes, but not sure; still a pretty laborious run and got passed by many more people than I passed (very few people have faster overall times, but slower runs). Legs felt pretty dead the whole way. Surprised that my run ranking is actually slightly higher than bike ranking. What would you do differently?: still need to work more bricks and running generally in training; Post race
Warm down: um, didn't really, just wandered around, got my snacks, sat and ate for a minute then gathered stuff and drove home. What limited your ability to perform faster: too controlled on bike; not enough running/brick training. Event comments: Good first true olympic distance race; need to solve the running after biking issue. Last updated: 2006-07-24 12:00 AM

Went to bed at 9:30; woke at 5; coffee, toast w/pb, banana, arrived about 6, waited; a few bites of cliff bar, a gel about 20 minutes before swim, which started about 8.
