Swim
Comments: This is my worst OW swim ever. The start was OK. I started in front and to the right like normal. The first 200m or so were good. After that, I couldn't get my breathing working for me. I think the altitude (6,400') and no taper were the main causes for my breathing problems. It got so bad I thought I might not finish. I breast stroked several times and at about the half way point I finally got into a good rhythm. At the final turn I started passing people and salvaged some of the swim. What would you do differently?: When I say it's a C race, I need to treat it like that. I went out on the start like I had prepared and tapered for the race. Big mistake. Maintain a positive atitude, even when things aren't going well. Use positive self talk. Realize there's a problem and work to fix it. Transition 1
Comments: After the gasping swim, I was fairly tired and walked T1. I saw my wife and gave her a "thumbs down". I think she could see I wasn't having a good day. What would you do differently?: Not much. It was a long T1 but considering I walked it wasn't too bad. My wetsuit came off easy. Bike
Comments: It was nice to get on the bike and out of the water. But, I came to realize that I wasn't really prepared for this race. I should have tapered. I also found myself thinking too much about the bad swim. Decided then to just ride and run and have fun. The climb up was uneventful. The ride downhill was fast and fun. Overall a slow ride. What would you do differently?: Again, stay positive. Spent too much time thinking about the past and not focusing on the present. Transition 2
Comments: As I came into T2 I took one foot out my shoe and then realized I was too close to the turn and dismount line to get my other foot out. So, I got off the bike with one shoe on the bike and one shoe on my foot. Felt kind of goofy. Crossed the timing mat and stopped to take my other shoe off. Had trouble racking the bike. They used different kind of racks than I'm used too. These were like bike racks at the play ground. What would you do differently?: Better timing on the shoe removal. Run
Comments: Even though this was a slow run, I still felt good on the run. Right out of T2 I stopped at a port-a-let. I walked the first hill and the aid stations. Funny thing, I saw lots of people dumping water on their heads trying to stay cool. The temperature was 85. After training in Dallas all summer, 85 degrees was a bit cool to me. What would you do differently?: Not much, except taper for the race. I ran a 1/2 mary on Thursday before the race and rode 1.5 hours in the mountains on Saturday. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank water. Looked around for the food, but there wasn't much. Just a couple of boxes of grapes, plums, and oranges. What limited your ability to perform faster: No taper and altitude. Event comments: They could have done a better job with the post race food. It was pretty bad. The oranges weren't even cut in quarters. The venue is great. The lake and the mountain scenery were beautiful. I met a few BT'ers - Lobo, Chile7473, Abqkid. Also saw Pilgrim on the run. Awake at 5 am. Ate oatmeal, milk, oj and coffee. Drove from Angel Fire to the race site in Las Vegas; about an hour.
This race was a "C" race for me. I was doing it just for the fun and as part of a vacation. We stayed in the Angel Fire and Taos area of NM. I didn't taper at all for this race and I'm sure this affected my performance.
Swam in the lake about 200 meters. The water felt great and refreshing. It was a cool 71 degrees.
