Swim
Comments: Swim was very good - I started way right and angled toward the turn buoy. I got kicked pretty good about 200 meters in that was a wake up. I sighted well and felt strong. My swim time was 1:52 faster than last year. Great time drop and consistent with this year's efforts Transition 1
Comments: What happened here? Terrible - yes it was very muddy and I was being careful but this was not good. Took me more than 20 seconds more than last year assuming like to like. Bike
Comments: This was fun - about 5 miles in found a group of 5 including me who would jockey the next 12 miles. We road hard but respective of each other. Really helped push the pace but we did not draft either. Fastest I have been on a bike mph for a triathlon. 2 and half minutes faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Nothing - I rode very well. I took a gel this year and it was a good plan. Transition 2
Comments: Again slower than last year. The mud made me do two things: 1. Not leave my shoes on the bike did not want all that mud on my feet 2. Be careful coming into TA Run
Comments: My first two miles split were right at 8:45 but my HR data puts me at 155 - race pace HR. SO this is what I had this day. The course was muddy; I commented later coming down one hill very cautiously because I envisioned blowing out a hamstring if I slipped. It poured the night before and the race course had some true mud pits. I was faster by 34 seconds than last year Post race
Warm down: I grabbed some water and a banana; the results were on a big screen but not working. I looked at my watch and was not happy. I wanted to break 1:30 thinking I had done a 1:32 last year. It was not until I got to my car that I realized that I had dropped over 4 minutes and this was a course PR. And then I was really happy What limited your ability to perform faster: I ran my A olympic race six days before; I did very well at that race and gave an absolute amazing effort. My oldest daughter was graduating that night from high school so we had a party and family in town. At one point this morning I seriously considering going back to bed. Given I was tired, recovering from the race last weekend and dealing with a graduation weekend, the race was good. Event comments: Every year I asked myself why I run this race - yes its close to home. But I never trail run. But I do it. Pleased with the effort and results - the transition times were terrible but some of that is the conditions. I was purposely being careful. Last updated: 2014-06-08 12:00 AM

This race is both my earliest in the day and the largest I do. It means getting up early because the parking can be an issue. I was up at 4:15 and out the door at 4:50. Ate my traditional oatmeal breakfast. I was on site at 5:10 - much earlier than last year. I was glad to be early given the size. Got my chip and marked, and setup my transition area.
I did my new but quickly becoming a tradition of a half mile run with activation i the middle. This is turning into a new good thing. I needed to hit the bathroom but it was just too long. I did go down and get a brief swim in; first non-wetsuit swim of the year.
