Swim
Comments: A new PR by about 2 minutes! I stayed with free for the first 200-300 yds (almost to the first buoy.) I found myself in the middle of a pack, so it wasn't comfortable, but a good experience to work through. After the first buoy I found myself with only 2-3 guys at a time to swim around, which was pretty consistent the rest of the way. Started out with 20 sets of free and 10 strokes of side for about 3 sets, then started increasing. First to 30 free, then 35, then 40. The last push was all free with probably about 50 sets (closing in on 200 yds.) Overall a good swim. A little more push then I'll do for IM, but a good test to see where I'm at. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: A long transition, but with the cool temperature, I felt it was important to bike with socks on. That probably added at least 45-60 seconds. I also toweled off a little more than normal. Other than that, it was pretty average. I got lost running my bike to the mounting zone, almost got on in the wrong spot! What would you do differently?: Walk the "bike out" path all the way to the mounting zone in advance! Bike
Comments: Overall, nothing to disappointing. I did push pretty hard, so I was a little surprised I didn't PR. I hate to use the equipment crutch, but it definitely feels like I've got my equipment pretty well maxxed out, and getting blasted by much nicer bikes with equal level athletes! What would you do differently?: Nothing. I pushed hard, but left myself a lot in the tank to have a great run! Transition 2
Comments: A pretty good transition for me. Nothing fancy, but still the upper half of my age group. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Another PR for the day! A really strong run. I went out with a 6:40 mile, and thought it might be a bit too much. I was definitely pushing the heart rate. The next two miles also stayed below 7 minutes, so I just kept pushing. I stopped at the second aid station to wash down my gel and take in all of the water. Also walked through the last aid station for a heed and water. I only went above 7 minutes for mile 5, then really picked it up for mile 6. What would you do differently?: It wasn't an even split, so I went out just a bit too hard, but it was pretty close, so I'm not sure that starting slower would've led to a better push at the end. Post race
Warm down: Walk around. Fluids, stretching, the usual. What limited your ability to perform faster: My bike. Event comments: Always a good event. A great turn out with lots of really talented athletes, probably the most competitive field I've been in. The only negative I have is that the second aid station on the run was right at the turn around. Should've been back about a half-mile from the turn around so runners could get two stabs at it! Stew and I got to the race plenty early this time. About 100 minutes before the pre-race meeting at the waterfront. Lots of times to prep my transition area, pre-race potty, etc. It was pretty cool out, so everything was done fairly promptly. Done with set up and dress by about 7:25am.
I did a couple of short sprints, high knees, and butt kicks with short stretch before getting into my wetsuit. Once the wet suit was on, we went to the water for some warm-up swimming. This was by far the most time I've given myself for warm-up swim, so I probably got in a good 200 yds. Then up on the beach for a brief stretch before taking off.
