Swim
Comments: Ended up winning the swim by 1 second ahead of the eventual overall winner. I should always be close to winning the swim, but my HR was a bit higher than I would have liked. Next time will hold off a bit more. My practice with pulling my cap/goggles into my suit helped out. Took about 5 seconds longer than I wanted to get the suit off. What would you do differently?: Take swim out a bit more controlled. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit was a bit hard to get off. Haven't mastered the feet in shoe routine yet so slipped shoes on in transition. While eventual winner was out of transition before me I actually passed him back up in the first 30 seconds of the bike as he was fiddling with shoes. What would you do differently?: Learn to put shoes on during bike, practice more with wetsuit. Bike
Comments: Still need more work on bike fitness - overall very happy with first time on my new Shiv Expert What would you do differently?: Nothing except work harder in training on bike Transition 2
Comments: Had a good T2 imo, took a bit longer with shoes (3-4 secs) than I would have liked but went pretty well. The riding with feet on top of shoes and flying dismount worked great after practicing earlier in the week. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Legs felt strong after the bike, I believe my pace was on track. I am not sure if the course was 5k or 3 miles (still) so unsure of my final pace. But overall very solid. What would you do differently?: Not much Post race
Warm down: Jogged about 10 minutes What limited your ability to perform faster: Hard training leading up to the race (no break in prior week) so raced tired. Otherwise, not much. Event comments: Overall awesome race - anyone in the NYC area should take part in this one. Free pancakes after the race, awesome trophy, push up contest, you name it. The race coordinator Joe Pantanella made sure everyone knew the race was supposed to be "fun" and had a great style/sense of humor. Last updated: 2014-06-09 12:00 AM

Set alarm clock for 4:45 am after finally getting to bed around 11. Had a buddy doing his first tri ever stay over since my girlfriend and I live right next to the Staten Island Ferry, and we all set out with our bikes and gear around 5:10 to catch the 5:30 ferry. The start line was 4 miles from the ferry, so all 3 of us got a nice brisk bike warm up on the way to the race. I was loaded with gear including a stuffed backback, a chain for my girlfriend's bike lock, and my new Bell Aero Helmet.
Besides the 4 mile leisurely bike race, jogged around 15 minutes at around marathon pace with 4-5 strides somewhere in there prior to 7:30 am mandatory race meeting. Got back to hear transition closing unexpectedly, so inhaled a quick gel and slipped on wetsuit. After listening to the course description (was it a 5k, or 3 mile run?? no one knew), we all trudged to the beach to walk 400 meters to the start line. Lots of glass in the Staten Island beach which helped get my reaction time up prior to the start. I saw the eventual winner (who I swam with on my master's team but didn't speak to him much up to this point) and wished him luck. I had some great conversation with several other colorful characters including a 64 year old that was much more ripped than I was, plus I believe he might have been swimming sans wetsuit. Dove in the water for about 2-3 minutes and swam about 100 yards as an additional warmup.
