Pre-race routine:

Got up early and drove the half hour to the race site. It was freezing so planned accordingly to race in warm clothes.

Swam in new Aquaman wetsuit. Love this suit. So easy to get on and swims so nice.
Event warmup:

Too cold to get in the water and then get back out. So, just did some jumping jacks and arm swings in the wetsuit.
Swim
  • 26m 2s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim went well. No issues.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 1
  • 03m 42s
Comments:

Swam with out jersey on. Put on compression top, jersey, arm warmers, gloves for this and that was not enough. Legs, crotch, etc were freezing for the first several miles.

Should have practiced with the arm warmers. Forgot about how to put these on quick.
What would you do differently?:

Put another layer on the bottom half.

This was about as good as I can do it with puttting on this much clothing.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 30s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.09 km/hr
Comments:

This was fricking hard. I had to spike my power all over the place to get up these hills. Brakes still wonky despite me working on them last night so the descents were a touch frightening but I wasn't willing to forego the time gains so hung on and let it ride.

This was beautiful. Every once in awhile, in the midst of the suffering, I had to look around and appreciate how pretty this was. It didn't hurt that everything was so green and lush while Michigan was grey and still pretty cold.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

This is the only place that I am in the running for fastest overall time :) I've got my T2 down.
Run
  • 46m 36s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 07m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

This is a hard but satisfying run. I had heard so much about it and was nervous. And it was hard and lived up to its billing. But it was doable. And I like running hills so I embraced this and just got it done.

There were a couple really steep parts that my body tried to talk my brain in to letting it walk for a little bit but I was afraid if I started walking then it would be easy to 'quit' on myself and walk a lot. So I just ran as hard as I thought I could handle.

In retrospect, looking back on the weekend, I might have had a little more in the legs for the run but I am satisfied with the overall weekend of running. Still pacing myself a little bit because there are still two more races and a lot of distance left to cover.
What would you do differently?:

Always wish I had pushed just a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched. Got warm clothes on. Ate at the buffet as quick as possible to get in some much needed calories.

Event comments:

Two races in and this is really fun. Really well organized and just has a great vibe. So far, so good. Now it gets hard.
