Swim
Comments: Actual swim time was 19:15, but official race results include the massive run back up to transition which added another 3+ mins. Had a great overall swim. Made sure I eased into the swim as to not get swept up in the front of the pack and it worked out well. Breathing was relaxed, sighting was good, and I had a lot of good power for the last 250 yds. Leaving shoes at the finish was a great call. What would you do differently?: I probably could have increased my pace a bit earlier than I did, however, I really wanted to ensure I did not get panicked breathing early-on. Transition 1
Comments: Had a bit of an issue getting the suit off the heels. Left sock got a bit stuck on the toes, and I had a slight issue getting my left cleat into the pedal after the mount. However, I was happy with my time. What would you do differently?: Practice my T1 transition more in training since I honestly hadn't done one since my last race in May! Bike
Comments: Had a great bike segment, keeping my pace right at 20 mph which was my goal. Probably could have pushed it more on the bike, but without knowing the run course I kept a little in the tank. What would you do differently?: Push it a little harder knowing now what the run course is like. Transition 2
Comments: Decent transition. No real flaws, but a little longer than I wanted it to be as I mentally slowed myself a bit to prepare for the longer run. What would you do differently?: Speed up a bit Run
Comments: Not my best run as far as pace goes, but I feel I ran my race and left it all on the table for the final 1/2 mile sprint. The hills were challenging, but I'm glad I had mixed some hill work into my training runs. What would you do differently?: Focus more time on my running in training. Too many run workouts were shortened or skipped due to lack of time, which definitely hurt my normal pace. Post race
Warm down: Lots of fluids and lots of love from my wife. :) Had a great time just recapping the race with her and enjoying the post-race festivities. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough running during my training definitely ruined my run, which is normally around 7:30/7:45 per mile. Event comments: Really enjoyed this race. Challenging, but fun, course with good competition and not a ton of people in the event. Felt like you were racing, but not rubbing elbows with people the whole time, which was nice. Arrived early, around 6:45am. Dropped off gear in transition and then headed to check in and get race packet. Setup my transition area and race numbers. Then walked down to the swim start with my wife to get a feel for the long run up to transition following the swim.
Did some light stretching on the grass around 7:45am and ate a banana. Around 8:10am I began my dynamic stretching routine and headed into the transition area. Around 8:30am I put on my wet-suit and walked down to the swim start. I got in the water around 8:45am-8:50am and did some very minor swimming, just to get acclimated to the water and my suit, and make sure the goggles were ok.
