Age Group Rank = 8/35
Pre-race routine:

Got my transition area set up, got all the necessary bits and bobs (aka timing chip, bib, body marking), drank some water and ate a small Clif bar. Took a caffeine pill 1 hour before the start.
Event warmup:

Swam in the lake for about 50m, remained on the beach before the start, while splashing water on my face to keep it cool.
Swim
  • 13m 22s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

First open water race went really well. Felt strong, composed and went really straight with minimal sighting. My strongest discipline, so I needed a fast swim to keep my confidence up.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Try to get my wetsuit off faster?
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Pretty solid for my first transition. No complaints.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe move faster?
Bike
  • 38m 35s
  • 20 kms
  • 31.10 km/hr
Comments:

Not bad for first bike portion. Definitely cooked my legs, and didn't let me heart rate lower. Was to tense and forgot to hydrate and fuel adequately, which really screwed me over on the run. It didn't feel super difficult, but it was not ideal.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water, and perhaps sports drink with calories if it is hot.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Nothing special here...felt ok. Time was slow because I took off running in the wrong direction! I also took some time to put on a hat and drink some more water.
What would you do differently?:

Again, related to the bike, drink more water and get my electrolytes in check. Also, run the right direction!
Run
  • 28m 20s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 40s  min/km
Comments:

Really terrible. I was unprepared for this, and it was 100% preventable. I had to stop and vomit after 1km, and walked every aid station and then some more. It is a small miracle I finished this part in under 30mins.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water during the bike, not fry my legs on the bike, and get electrolytes in my body if it is hot. Lost salts likely contributed to the vomiting. Need to work on cadence and running form. Will need to train for the run more moving forward.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much here. Stretch, water, food. Try to cool off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fueling, hydration and pacing.

Event comments:

It was a great race, I had fun and given that this was my first ever triathlon, I never felt very confused. I don't have much to compare it to, but I would say it was very well done.
