Comments:

It was a hot and humid morning - about 75 degrees and clear sunny skies. My plan was to start at 1-hour pace (6:25-ish) and try to hold steady or possibly get faster. The course has changed to prior years and they added another large hill out by Lake Michigan. It was a good chance the hot weather could affect the race as well.

Started out right on pace and clipped through the first 2 miles in 6:26 and 6:23. I had settled into a good rythem and the race was starting to spread out. As we make our way out to Lake Michigan is when the rollers and hills start. About mile 4 is when I started to gain on a group of about 3-4 people. We went up and over the big hill and then I really started to gain on them at the bottom. I passed 2 of them at this point and then set my sights on the next two.

My pace did drop in the hills section and had those three miles in 6:32; 6:39 and 6:45 so pace took a hit but based on my performance I think it hurt everybody else more. Once the course started to flatten out again for the final 3 miles is when my pace got back down to 6:25 range and got back into my rythem. I passed another 2 people before mile 7.

We jumped on the bike path for the final 2 miles or so. Miles 6-8 were 6:21; 6:27; 6:26. I was able to pass 2 more people in the last 2 miles and thought that I might squeeze in the top 5 OA. The last 0.35 miles was at 6:00 pace and finished fairly strong with very little left in the tank.

The heat really did not bother me although everybody was complaining about it after the race...along with the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Good race for me. This was at the tail end of week 2 of a 3 week 70.3 build so knew my legs were not going to be fresh but still wanted to give a solid effort.
Post race
Warm down:

1 mile CD run with stretching.

Event comments:

This is a very scenic course with some tough rollers/hills to keep you honest. I thought the course markings were sparse at some key intersections which I think out of town folks had trouble figuring out.
