Swim
Comments: HOLY COW, one of the hardest swims I've ever done. Knew I wasn't going to be strong with this nagging hip pain, but spent most of the time mentally keeping myself in the race. Kept thinking I would turn and at some point be rid of the waves, nope. Goggles were a piece of junk and fogged up a lot. Couldn't sight every time I came up for air I was hit with a wave. Got way off course on the way back and finally a kayaker told where I had to go back to get back in line. I knew my tme was terrible but all I wanted to do was finish,. What would you do differently?: First open water swim in two years...just need more practice. Practice with actual race day goggles. Transition 1
Comments: So thankful to see my family on the beach, kissed the boys a few times and jogged up the hill. Slow to get on shoes, mostly just making sure I had everything. Gave my neighbor my bike tool because her seat had come loose. THOUGHT I had put on my race belt, obviously not.... What would you do differently?: Find something other than gu to eat on T1, was hungry on the bike Bike
Comments: I knew there were some slow hills to deal with and I hadn't really trained on the hills. My time was on par with the nation's tri from two years ago (pre-baby) so even though I know I can do better, I was happy with this. Uphills were SLOW, but I was able to let it fly down (max speed was just shy of 30mph!) What would you do differently?: Find something solid to eat on the course, hydration was good, but stomach was too sloshy on the run. Transition 2
Comments: I can't believe someone had a slower t2 time than I did. I was fairly pleased with my under 2 minute transition until I went to the run out spot and they asked me where my race bib was. I said it was on only to look down and it wasn't. WTH!?!? I ran back to my gear and looked everywhere even in my neighbors' stuff. Nowhere. I started to panic thinking they wouldn't let me race. After 5 minutes of looking I said screw it, stuck my helmet number on my water bed (I wanted my own gatorade, don't like heed) and went out. They volunteers said I might get a penalty and I said "screw it". My friend who was next to me ended up having my belt, it had fallen off on T1 (saw it in my husband's pics) and someone put it with her stuff. She said she was so out of it when she came in from the bike she forgot to put it with my stuff. What would you do differently?: Race belt will not go on during the bike again. It will be staged with the shoes and put on then Run
Comments: Knew it would be hot, legs felt okay but stomach was sloshy. Didn't each PB crackers but should have brought them with me. Was great to see the family at the transition and told them to meet me at the cottage at mi 1.5 with the sponges.Talked with a few people to encourage them. Felt ok, just knew I did't have speed so I walk a little bit at each mile and stopped to get water to dump on my head. LOVED the guys and gals with the cold rags. Glad we biked thee run course the day before to know just how far up we went on the Bay side What would you do differently?: Need more brick work outs, possibly some speed. I would have had a better pace if it hadn't been so hot and I wasn't dealing with the hip/back issue Post race
Warm down: Walked around with family to pack up stuff, did some hamstring stretching and drank a lot of cold water. Biked back to house What limited your ability to perform faster: Weather/water were hard, lack of OW training and time biking hills. Event comments: LOVE Set Up event races (even though they didn't have Women's t-shirts this time). Signed up for a few more of their races this summer/fall to prep for B2B in October. Got into town on Friday and went out to watch the Sprint race start and transition. Stretched and hydrated all day Saturday. Drove the bike course and did a water temp check except the wind had kicked up and the waves were big for the river. Woke up at 4:30am on race day (was actually able to sleep) but still had the sore hip. Ate a packet of oatmeal, cheese stick and drank a cup of coffee.
Biked 1.5 miles from cottage to race start. Checked in, body marked and set up transition. Went for a 10 minute jog, stretched hip a bit and found potty one last time. In second wave so just enough time to kiss family and go.
