Pre-race routine:

I went over on Saturday morning for the practice swim before the kid's triathlon. Just wanted to make sure that I could complete the distance. I haven't been swimming much and this would be my first OWS without a wetsuit. It wasn't pretty or fast but I was able to do it without trouble so knew I'd be good for the race on Sunday. Took it easy the rest of the day.

Up at 3am on Sunday - our daughter is spending the week in Connecticut with her cousins and she had to be at the airport by 4:30. After Steve left to take her I tried to go back to sleep for a while but didn't have a lot of success. Finally got up around 5:30, had some breakfast and headed out to the race.
Event warmup:

Not much. The sprint wasn't scheduled to start until an hour after the long course started so I just sat around and watched them go off.

Not bad considering my lack of swimming lately. I did the first 100m pretty well, things felt apart a bit after that. Did some breaststroke, some sidestroke, flipped onto my back once just to relax a bit. Just took my time. I'll never be a fast swimmer, just getting to the end is good for me.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the pool.

Took my time here - dried my feet a little, got the shoes on, helmet on, Garmin on, grabbed my bike and off I went.

This was a really good bike leg for me. Helps that the course is completely flat and there was little to no wind. Spent the whole ride in the big chain ring (I usually stay in the middle one) and just enjoyed the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - my cycling is getting better, just need to keep it up.

T2 is always pretty quick for me since I don't have to change shoes. Just rack the bike, off with the helmet, grab the visor and race belt and I'm on my way.

Not sure I can go any faster.

I didn't know how much of this I would actually be able to run with the problems with my ankle/calf, but it didn't act up too badly. It was pretty hot by this time though - the sprinklers and hoses that the residents set up for the runners really felt good and were much appreciated!

Big Shark always puts on a good race. I've volunteered at this race 4 of the last 5 years and love it - even better this year since I actually participated!
