Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 5/11
Pre-race routine:

The usual: light breakfast (oatmeal), electrolytes 2h before, water, coffee 1.5h before. 1GU gel.
Event warmup:

Easy swim for 200m.
Swim
  • 16m 11s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

PB for 750m unexpectedly, swam straight, drafted some for the first 200m and more after the half point. I was happy to finish with a group of people and not alone as before :-). I felt good after the swim, not winded at all.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

One lady crashed into me when I was mounting the bike, she did not see me. She fell down right onto my chain, I was glad she did not get hurt. Maybe that is why my gear switching was not smooth after, it was clicking and grinding for a bit at first.
What would you do differently?:

Think less, kept thinking of what I forgot.
Bike
  • 41m 9s
  • 20 kms
  • 29.16 km/hr
Comments:

Grind, click, click, then was ok. Then again shifting was not smooth on the hill and just before the downhill it felt like my derailer was rubbing and could not shift into the harder at gear in the back.

A few people passed me on the uphill, I was mainly sitting down and stood up 2/3 way up.
What would you do differently?:

Practice faster cornering. Smoother gear shifting and of course ride more hills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 25s
Comments:

Had a good place in the transition zone.
Run
  • 30m 9s
  • 5.5 kms
  • 05m 29s  min/km
Comments:

Very bricky legs for the first 1km.
Sped up for the last 2km. Light cramp at 4km, managed to keep it under control.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot my GPS, knowing my pace always helps me.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to run more often and add some variety to my running routes (more hills, even little).l

Event comments:

Very happy with the race. Overall 4min faster since last year's race (3min on the swim and 1min on the run). I was aiming to finish under 1:30min and yay! Can train more brick running, it definitely has a big impact. Train more hills on the bike and little hills on the run need more attention. Remember my pacer GPS next time.
