Pre-race routine:

It was announced Friday before the race that it would be shortened to a Sprint Triathlon because of flooding on the bike course. Obviously this dramatically changed everyone's strategy for the race.
I woke up at 5 and was at the race site by 6. Got my transition all set up before it closed at 6:45 and then the waiting began until my race started just before 9:00.
Event warmup:

I ate a banana and muffin before I got to the race, and not much at the race site except for a bite of cliff bar and a gel just before we started. Did some light stretching but lost track of time and had to rush to make the start of my wave.
Swim
  • 14m 59s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m / 100 meters
Comments:

Unfortunately the water was JUST warm enough for it to not be wetsuit legal. So that sucked. I passed a lot of people since I started near the back of my time trial wave. Thought I sighted really well. Pretty happy with my time considering I couldn't wear a wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

I should have gotten to the start earlier so I could have gone earlier in my time trial wave and wouldn't have had to navigate by passing people.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Pretty standard transition.
Bike
  • 32m 40s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 22.78 mile/hr
Comments:

VERY happy with this bike ride. Fastest bike split of any race I've ever done. Pushed hard on it though and could tell after I got off my bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Good transition, but before the race I decided I'd put socks on for the run, which I haven't been doing in my sprints this year. On the bike I thought I didn't want to spend the time putting my socks on, but I didn't have any body glide in transition to put on my toes, so I was forced to spend the extra 10-15 seconds to put socks on.
What would you do differently?:

Body glide instead of socks on my feet, which would have saved me a little time.
Run
  • 19m 11s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Went out very fast but felt good for the first mile, but paid for it the next 2 miles. I still kept an OK pace but was definitely fatigued.
What would you do differently?:

Go out a little slower and try to hold that pace throughout instead of just trying to hold on at the end.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Unfortunately I missed the podium in my age group by 4 seconds. And in the days after the race you get to thinking A LOT about all the different things you could have done to save 4 seconds. BUT, to be fair, it was a time trial start, so I didn't know that I was only 4 seconds behind, otherwise I would have pushed it at the end.

Event comments:

This is a very well put on race. Everything is well organized and a class act in all aspects. Very impressed with this race. The swag was the best of any race I've ever competed in as well.
