Swim
Comments: I took the swim easy as if I were doing my Ironman event (this is a training race for that). Felt great, remained very calm throughout. Exited the water feeling good. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: The mount area was packed so it was slow going. The first mile or so was tight and over grass and through very small areas so I took it nice and easy. Saw a few wrecks! What would you do differently?: Nothing. Considering the long run up the beach and my transition area being on the very far side of the park I was happy with this. Bike
Comments: I did not think I would pull out much more than 18 mph on this ride. I have put in the rides but I have been slow all season. I think the training is finally paying off! What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: Slower transition. I was a little worn out. :) What would you do differently?: Maybe just be a little bit faster/more efficient. Run
Comments: I really did not push on the run. I knew I was prepping for my Ironman performance and I acted as if I was doing just that. I ran the first 6 miles around 8:20 pace and felt decent. Then, I began to implement walking breaks about every .6 of a mile. Sometimes I walked a little more than I should have. I had met other racers and we had a good time. What would you do differently?: I think in hindsight I would push harder and try to come in with a better average pace (8:45 or so). I know I had it in me but was too busy enjoying the moment. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line and felt very good. Crediting that to my "not so hard" run/walk. ;) Stretched a bit but my back was pretty sore. Event comments: I probably won't do this race again, but I am glad I did it once! It was pretty organized and there were plenty of very talented athletes there! They didn't have much at the expo (if you even want to call it that) and there wasn't much in the town to speak of. It was decent countryside and everything was very accessible. Got up at 4:45 AM. Had a banana and protein shake and loaded up for the race. We stayed just 3 minutes from the start. Parking was pretty chaotic, but we found a spot on one of the side roads so nothing too crazy. We walked about 3 blocks to the transition area. I ate a granola bar there and had my pre-race E&E just before the swim talk on the beach. Felt nervous but in general very prepared.
I did some active stretching and got in the water to swim about 25 yards.
